hey leaf,
yes mine are rubbing and i have had no problems, but your yellow tube idea is just going to be added insurance. I would always rather be overly safe than to not be concerned about things at all.

Hey people. Ah its been a little slow going on the ultimate as I wanted to take a little break, otherwise it will all be finished and that will be that! Needless to say – I installed those yellow guide tubes for the pull/pull as pictured below and it all tracks sweet now. I also installed my Hobbico Voltmeter in the pit (location and method courtesy of Tuwood).

I then proceeded to mock up the plan as everything is really finished and balance laterally and nose/aft was spot on! It is a little tail heavy but I am counting on numerous coats of paint on the cowl to balance that out (at worst I will reposition the battery). Looks sweet so I will make a start on the covering of the wings....once I decide on a final scheme!

Well I have made progress with covering, top wing pretty much done! To be honest I find covering quite an organic process and seldom cover in a design that I plan to do as it all seems to come down to colour combinations. I wanted to avoid doing the ‘same old’ but I really like this stripe pattern which a number of other modelers have used in the past. I’m keeping it simple at this stage with the pearl copper and sapphire blue on top, and a black stripe with silver on the bottom. The bottom in particular needs to be simple as I get disorientated quite easy with my short sightedness!!

I included a pic of all the colours I have available – I will make the fuse a little more varied in colour but will keep with the copper theme on the tail surfaces for sure. I may even add a little red on the underside of the wings – we shall see!! Hope ya’ll like that colour combo anyway.

Leaf you did it ! I have owned two Goldberg Ult's and flown 10 others. You have me wanting another one and I can resist no longer. Both I have owned were ST 90 powered. The best one I have flown was YS 1.20 powered. So am looking at a Saito 1.25 or Saito 1.15. The OS you used would be great also but is a little heavier. When my wife asked I am going to blame it all on you. Do you think she will buy it?

Dave; awesome! Glad to see this thread has inspired people! I somehow don't think that your wife will buy that story, but you can't blame a guy for trying can ya! Yes the 120ax is alittle heavier although I don't have any experience with any brand other than OS so can't personally make an honest comparison. Either way my power to weight ratio is going to be a little crazy so hovering at least should not be a problem, although the lighter the better I know!

I am currently covering the other wing now and I am rethinking the black stripe on the underside of the wing, but sticking with the pearl copper on top for sure! I use the windex method to fix those, works great so long as once its all dry you seal the ends with your iron to stop them lifting.

oh yes, forgot to mention. I have my eye on the Aeroworks Yak54 120 size plane for which the os 120ax is said to be ideally suited. Should I find the 120 too insane I may invest in a good saito 120 four stroke for the ultimate, and reserve the 120 for the YAK which would be my monster 3D plane I think. But thats for the future....I'm only a young 24 and have afew things I want to do before spending large on planes ahaha!@

Sounds like a good plan. I would not buy a Saito 1.20 though. The Saito 1.25 is lighter and more powerful. I also have a 72" Yak 54 from QQ aircraft. I have a Saito 1.80 on it. I think it falls into the insane power category. It weighs about 8.5lbs.

I may get stoned for saying this but I am looking at the Ult ARF. With the tower discount I can get one for $250. The kit is $200 and I would need to buy the fiberglass. I could still remove some of the covering for inspection and be money ahead.

Oh wow the Ultimate kit has gone up! Why I ordered it, it was $169. Well there isn't anything wrong with the ARF, especially given the price considerations. Also, the ARF ships with fiberglass parts and chunky aluminium LG already, as well as upgraded hardware from what I have seen. Might be FAR cheaper at the end of the day!

I think everything is going to go up The value of the US dollar is going down. The next batch of ARFs that Tower gets will be higher. That's why I'm doing it now. I wont have engine money till the fall but I can get the radio gear in.

BTW I am 20 years older then you and I am really impressed with your workmanship. Most guys your age don't have the patience to get everything just right. Or maybe it's American 24 year olds. Either way keep up the good work. Your ULT will soon be your favorite plane.

Thanks Dave, I really appreciate your kind words. I guess I have always been a bit of a perfectionist so like to do a good job and not rush things too much if I can help it! This one has been an excercise in patience though as I am really eager to see her finnished in the glossy Monokote!

Here re the two wings done now. Sealed top hinge sections but I haven't sealed the underside for fear of constricting aileron movement too much. The undersides are still all aluminium colour and haven't decided yet on that part of the trim scheme. Any ideas are welcome!

I would not get to busy with it. You already have a nice pattern on the top. To much pattern can get muddy in the air. I did a profile with a lot of pattern because it rolls so fast. Most of the time I have the bottom one color. Remember the only time you see the bottom for any length of time is on rolls or long knife edges.
