since I made a mockery of my post with "Beer" as an answer I figured I would also tell you a good tip .
Seriuosly visit Dollar Tree , for $1.00 you can buy extra tools and simply leave them in your car . I picked up the following "each" for $1.00
Plyers , long nose and short , precision screw drive set , plastic ties , wipes , ect .
Because there so cheap , you wont take the chance of losing your good home set .

The size of the field box is Directly proportional to the distance TO the field, Inversely proportional to the number of guys that will be AT the field when I get there, and ...... since they all fly 'big birds' and I fly small birds...I hate it when I forgot a part and I'm the only one there. It's 14 miles to home, and 14 miles back, and with the price of gas... I'm retired, and often the only one there, except Saturday and Sunday. So, EACH person should have a field box to meet his needs....

True, I have a big plastic "tote" box I keep in the back of my truck with misc basic items that are not only useful at the field but useful if you have a break down or other problem. I may be the exception, but it seems that I have collected two of every tool I have one way or another. One good, one not so good. Since it's all "in case" or not so good stuff I'm not all that worried about losing it or it getting stolen.

I keep trash bags in there too. You don't think the trash at the field just disappears do you?

assortment of screwdrivers (to many to name)
assortment of Allen heads (to many to name)
Extra fuel tubing
dental floss

stir sticks
rags
elastics for trainers (even though i don't fly my trainer much i keep them around... always happens someone new brings a trainer and no one has elastics )

power panel
voltmeter
tachometer
starter
accucyle with charge leads
12V battery
set of razor blades
buddy box cord

First aid kit this is a big one i think everyone should have one just in case.....

This is way more than anyone probably needs but i know I have it i really don't mind people boring stuff from me, So long as i get my tools back its all good, although generally by the second or third time they need something il just tell them were it is in the box...

Back when I first started flying R/C in the late 60s (before field boxes became popular) I carried my stuff in a small 8x8x8 wooden crate. It contained...

A quart of Duke's Fuel (Why carry around a gallon when a quart would power my OS .30 all weekend?)
A rubber squeeze bulb for transferring fuel
A 1.5V dry cell and glow plug clip
A bunch of #64 rubber bands for the wings (packed in a plastic container with a little corn starch sprinkled in to absorb the spent fuel.)
Devcon 5-minute epoxy (Back then, EVERYTHING could be fixed with 5-minute epoxy!)
An extra prop or two
An extra glow plug
A 4-Way glow plug wrench
A short length of garden hose (Didn't have a chicken stick.)
A single edge razor blade (Couldn't afford the luxury of a second X-Acto.)
A pair of rusty needle nose pliers
A couple of small screwdrivers
One allen wrench for my wheel collars
An extra wheel collar
Some paper towels (stolen from my high school bathroom)
And some change for a pay phone or Coke machine

And believe it or not, all of it except for the quart of fuel would fit in that box. Looking back, it's amazing that I was able to enjoy myself with so little. Now days, my field box barely fits in my pickup. What happened???

I have two field boxes.

In the first one which is a 12 pack oil carton with a semi- circle cut in the top sides for holding upside down airplanes- I carry a gallon of fuel with an electric fuel pump and 9v battery strapped on it, a roll of paper towels, a spray bottle w/cleaner, and hand towels. A starter and quick chargers fit in there too when needed.

The second one is a Rubbermaid Step box with a power panel mounted in the front; in it are:
pliers-needle nose and farmer type
nut drivers
screwdrivers
allen wrenches- ball type too
tach
props
rubber bands
trainer cord
glow starter
hemostat
loaded voltmeter
misc. glow plugs
a couple wrenches
prop wrench
small crescent wrench
glow plug driver cord, ni-starter charge cord
other misc. junk that accumulates

In the truck I carry a 12v battery for powering stuff if I need it-it usually just gets used for powering quick chargers-I seldom use a power panel or starter anymore.

A quick trip for a flight or two and I just take the fuel box and ni-starter and needle nose or hemostat(airplane and radio also of course).

Guys
I take only the necessary items to fly :
planes (gas, nitro & electric) as many as I can get in.
fuel
Battery Charger
Battery Packs
Radio
Starter box (Glow panel & starter)
Restraints

If anything needs fixing/repairing or won't run properly it goes back in the car and it gets fixed at home.
I like to fly as much as possible so it's minimal work at the field for me, replacing a broken prop or an uncowled plug is about the limit, I don't bend as easy as I used to.

Cheers
Paul
