I have seen a lot of monster field boxes which look like mini hobby stores. My new question is whats the fewest items a good field box needs to have?

Two screw drivers...phillips and a flat head. A glow driver. Maybe a starter...

The rest you can barrow from your buddies out at the field.

If you want to fly all day, whatever tool you need to get to your batteries, a couple of extra lipos and a charger. Go 2.4 and you can leave your frequency flag at home too.

Well, I don't know if it's overboard for other but it's overboard for me. I don't like dragging out a bunch of stuff that I'm probably not going to use. I have a relatively small box of basic tools and my fuel and I have another small plastic box (fishing lure type box) that I keep in my truck and it contains stuff that I don't normally need and I keep extra props, spinners, tires, and stuff under my seat. I mostly have those incase someone else needs them. I guess it just depends on how much you feel you need to have with you at the flying table or spot. I don't want to have to lug all that stuff around.

Fuel, fuel pump, starter battery, starter, glow started, 2 screw drivers, 1/16 hex, 4/40 hex, wrench for prop nuts, spare glow plug seems minimal for nitro...for electric, swap out fuel, glow, starter for lipos and chargers.

It sucks showing up at the field and not having the basic items you need. Borrowing once or twice is fine, but don't make yourself a nuisance because you're too lazy to lug around your support stuff.

Hope that helps!
Mark

I was kidding. But firmly agree...borrowing stuff more than once or twice will make you a nuisance. Quick.

Here's a pic of my box and I think it's to much.

I got two half gallon jugs for fuel so I wouldn't have to lug a gallon of 2 stroke and a gallon of 4 stroke.

4 screw drivers large and small
pliers
wrenches of the right size
battery checker
tach
starter
glow driver
various nuts and bolts and bits.
small fuel catch bottle (so I don't kill the grass or waste fuel)

If the plane needs more than that it goes home to get fixed.

The most borrowed item in my box ... a small bottle of CA. I keep it there for a "just in case" moment - never used it myself, but everyone knows I've got it if they need something spot glued. Sort of "off topic", but Meaden's picture/inventory reminded me [)]

For glow powered planes, I guess the absolute minimum is:

Whatever tools are required to assemble the plane at the field (possibly none)
Fuel, and a way to get it into the tank
Glow driver
Chicken stick (or some other safe way to start the engine)

You do not 'need' any other tools or spare parts. If something breaks, or needs adjustment, you just pack up and go home.

I live 45 miles from the flying field. My brother and I fly together (he lives near me) and we take a lot of tools and 'stuff' with us. We do not want to be grounded because of a screw that falls out or some other simple thing that is easily fixed if you have 'stuff.' Most of this stays in the truck. Our actual field boxes that go to the pits contain fuel, pump, glow driver, starter.

Borrowing is OK, on occasion, but not all the time. We're happy to loan tools and supply any parts we have with us to any other pilot, but, we would probably stop if the same person needed something every trip to the field.

My box holds the following :
Fuel
power panel
starter
glow plug igniter cord for the power panel
4 way wrench
1 med straight screw driver, 1 small straight screw driver, 1 philips
2 ball drivers
1 miniature cresent wrench
1 Gerger multi-tool, (pliers, files, knife, etc.)
1 Sunscreen stick SPF30
2 Bandaide strips
3 spare glow plugs
1 D cell ni starter ,( just stared using this and really like it)
1 miniature flashlight
1 small spray bottle
1 old thin bath towel

And since my car has several glove box like compartments, there is a small tool kit, more plugs, and few more tools, and Off bug repellent. Also a hat and a wind breaker.

I don't carry materials for repairs. I rather do those at home.
