I have a couple on road cars and off road cars and a boat , All are nitro. I have recently got a helicopter and going with lipos, new to lipos, but will need all my other batt charged also. I have been looking at the Triton 2 ,I need a new charger. I have been looking at a lot of chargers and just came across this one which seems to be top notch. How do you guys like and what do you use it for? Also, i need batteries charged quickly at times (who doesnt) how fast can this charger charge a pack of 1320mAh 11.1V 3 Cell Li Poly 3s ?

The 989 is great, I like it and like the power supply as well. It will charge up to 10 amps , yet fast chargeing may be limited by the battery rather than the charger since your battery is small.

I can deal with it being limited by the batt. being limited by the charger is what I dont want.

Both chargers have 5-6 times as much is required for 1C chargeing a 3Sx1320 battery , so you would be good to go with either one.

I’ve been using the 989 for about 6-8 months now and think it a great charger. It’s in the shop right now undergoing a warranty repair (Charger continues to charge/discharge at a low rate during the rest part in the auto cycle mode). The only beef I have is they’ve had the charger SEVEN weeks now, which to me isn’t exactly stellar customer service. Something to consider. SOS

Dont know how true this is but the guy up at the hobby shop said the same thing. He said hes sees a lot of them come in for repair and get them back a month later just to have other problems.

I've been happy with the purchase. All though I will say the instruction manual is poorly designed/written. Other than that, I find it to be a great device.

Hi Tim,

Here's the correspondence I’ve had with the folks at MRC. (Read from the bottom up).

Your charger came in on the 6th of March. I'll work on it today and have it
ready to ship out by early next week.

John

Subject: Repair Status

Hi MRC,

I sent in my 989 per Tim@mrc for repair/replacement way back on
03/04/2008 via USPS 2nd day and haven't heard back from you folks.
Inquires to Tim@mrc have yielded no replies. I'd like to get immediate
status and get my charger replaced post haste.

STEVE SCHLAEFER

Tim, It seems to me if it's going to take so long to make a repair it would be less expensive, and provide for better customer relations for you folks to simply replace it. Thanks, SOS

Hey Tim, Are you out there?

I still haven’t received my 989 back from you folks. You’ve had it since the 6th of March and said it would be sent out in a few days. What’s up? No response from you since my 04/23/2008 post and no response from MRC Service since way before that.

Frustrated as heck, SOS

PS. You can make things better by installing software to charge my A123 batteries.

Pretty poor service I must say! Your handling yourself rather well for them having your 989 so long.
Overall I like the charger but is def down on power for charging large packs. Only pushing a little over 110 watts so it's def not a powerhouse. To stay with the times they should offer an A123 upgrade. A123's are getting a huge following so I'm suprised they just shrugged off suggestions to offer an upgrade. O'well, my Mastech is providing the muscle I need to charge my 6s packs. It would be nice to be able to charge my packs to capacity and walk away from them when there isn't a rush to fly.

I bought my Super Brain 989 back in January of 2007. I've used it extensively for 2 seasons now charging and cycling NiCd receiver and transmitter packs, charging and cycling NiMH flight packs, and charging a variety of non-balanced and balanced LiPo packs.

I use a Great Planes Electrifly Equinox balancing module with my 989, and it's a terrific combination.

I didn't have any trouble understanding the manual when I got the charger. I'm happy to say I can't comment on MRC's customer service because my 989 charger has performed flawlessly and I've had no need of service.

My only complaint is that the Super Brain 989 is such a nice charger that I don't want to take it out to the field. It stays at home in the shop while I use my Hobbico Quick Field Charger MkII out at the club. Unlike the Hobbico charger, I don't get castor oil residue all over the 989.

Sorry...it's on it's way back to you. You should have it any day now. I wanted to ship it Red Label (next day), but it had already shipped out before I could get to it. Again, sorry it took so long. We reprogrammed it to change the timer, and wanted to test it fully before sending it back to you.
Please refer to some previous posts regarding charging A123s. While there isn't a specific setting for them, it will charge them.

I just tracked it, you should have it tomorrow.

Tim

It's easier said than done with just offering an upgrade. There's only so much room on these chips, and screens when produced. Upgrades have to be well thought out and programs must be written for these. If we do decide to offer an upgrade for A123, then odds are that the charger would lose some capability elsewhere. Maybe a future charger, or another run of 989's down the road will have that capability, but for now, the 989 stays as is.
