Steve, I have a question too.

I know you know way more than me about any plane probably and for sure the SE5a but shouldnt your cap strip be more like 1/4" wide for 1/3 scale ?

1/4" wide would mean the real ribs were 3/4" wide and if you are making the cap strips 1/8" wide that would mean the real ribs were 3/8" wide.

I may have just answered my own question here because I guess 3/8" wide wood would be plenty for real ribs wouldnt it...

Would that be the case for my Jenny ?

Another question is...
Just how do you figure the width of your cap strip's on a scale build ?
Did you find that information somewhere for your Se5a ?

Just wandering this stuff because I will be building that Jenny someday and I really never give it much thought as to making the ribs the right thickness.

Also, this tells me I went way overboard with my Bristol because I used 1/4" cap strips and it is only 1/6th scale...lol...[)]

No problem John. The ribs are 1/8" balsa and the cap strip is 1/16" x 1/8" Bass wood. The only part of the Jig that's raised is the spar locations. The balsa is pinned in place while I glue on the strips.

Hey Steve,

Great project. I'm the creator of the Hoosier Dawn Patrol and want to invite you to our fly in, August 22,23,24 at the AMA flying site in Muncie, Indiana. You are modeling my favorite airplne, except I am strictly sport scale at this time. I had plans to build a 1/3 scale version this past winter, but life got in the way, so I haven't started it yet. Just finishing a 1/4 scale SE5a that I hope to fly in the next couple of weeks. I assume the 1/3 scale version is RC. BTW, the HDP is open to all sizes and power and that includes controline. Feel free to bring it next August and we will make room to fly it. You will find the group very accomodating.

Hi Tim. Thanks buddy! You just saved me a lot of grief. I went back and remeasured, and you're right. The full scale looks like 5/8" so mine need to be a little over 3/16". I have a bare bones shot of the wing. I know that the leading edge of the aileron is 36"(from the three view) I plug that info into modelcad and then I can measure other parts. I'm not sure what I did wrong before, but I'm glad you caught it.

John. Now that I have to make another jig, I'll let you know what I come up with.

Steve P. Thanks for the invitation. I'm looking forward to it.

Thanks again,Tim.
Steve

Thanks Pete. Have one for me!
OK. I've made a new jig and I'm back to making ribs. I put an alignment post at the leading edge and a piece of carbon fiber at the trailing edge. Balsa spacers raise the rib pieces and pieces of spar align the center section. I've coated the jig with a wax lubricant (Door-Ease) to keep things from sticking where they shouldn't. So, Back to work!

Tim,

Yep I remember you from RC Hangout, and read your posts on several Forums. Thanks for the kind words about the website. Getting ready to add some things in the next week. I've got some Toledo photos and hopefully a video of Herman Cholowenski test flying his 38% DR1 Tripe later today.
BTW, what issue of Model Aviation was Steve's plane in?

Steve,

Sorry I missed you at the Hobby Shop last week, sure would have liked to see the SE5A up close. Those there were impressed.
