smcouch77 -> 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/20/2008 9:37:52 PM)

OK, here we go! I got my wing plans printed yesterday. I knew it was a big plane, but when I rolled the plan out on the bench, I realized just how big. One thing’s for sure. I’ll never misplace it![:D]
The ribs are three sections of 1/8” balsa with 1/16”x 1/8” bass wood cap strips. I’ll be busy for awhile making these. There are a bunch of them.[8|]

Cool !!!!

I'm here Steve !!!!

I cant wait to see this one, and I get to be here from the very beginning this time !!! [:D]

I still want to build a big Jenny...

Maybe you will inspire me to get started...lol lol lol....

I'm sure this will be the best build yet that I have seen, although your last one will be very hard to beat !!! [:)]

Why not go ahead and start the Jenny now? Your Bristol is finished and you need to have something on the bench to stay sane.(Well, almost sane[:D])
Steve

timfarrar -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/20/2008 11:20:59 PM)

Well, I cant start it yet actually because I have something on the build board and I have a Fleet Bipe that I was wanting to build first for my first big plane.

The Feet Bipe is 84" wingspan and I have everything to get going for it...[:)]

I dont have anything for the Jenny yet except the plan's.
And I really need to have them reduced because they are 150" wingspan and that is just way to big...lol...[:D]

Steve
Looking forward to seeing your build. What is the wingspan and length going to be? Lots of small neat little details on the SE5A, look forward to the pictures. No worries about misplacing it at 1/3 scale. My Pup keeps getting in my way...........but love the size.

Steve, what's that "paperweight' at the end of your wing plans? [:D]

PS. Moderators: The "wink" emoticon is also being affected by the hack.

Oh, that little thing? Just something I threw together in my spare time[:D]

I got a DVD today from a gent that worked on the restoration of 904 at the Shuttleworth Collection. Over 200 pics for me to pour over for the next couple of months! I'm in Hog Heaven![:)]
Here are a couple of samples.

Steve, I was just thinking...

I cant imagine what you are going to do to this 1/3rd scale because you did such amazing things to the 1/6th ascle that I just couldnt believe it.

I wonder, are you going to do the same things to the 1/3rd scale or do you have even more things in mind ?

I cant wait until you have something setting there to see...lol lol lol...

I have been having trouble with smiley faces and the apostrophe's.
Although I didnt try any this time so they may be fixed.

BobH -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/22/2008 1:15:07 AM)

Wowser what a great DVD! I'm sure it'll be very usefull.

smcouch77 -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/22/2008 1:37:00 AM)

Hi Tim. At this larger scale, I should be able to get finer details. Also, I want to try to make some things work. Like the radiator shutters and some of the instruments. I mean, like, the compass should point north, shouldn't it?[:D]
Bob. It's amazing how helpful people are if you just ask. In the last week I've received a parts catalog with drawings, and now this DVD. God! I love this hobby!
How's this pic for up close and personal?
Steve

timfarrar -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/22/2008 1:58:24 AM)

Steve, your thought's for model's just go a couple step's beyond my mind thinks of.

If that makes sense...lol lol lol...

I like to think of ways to make something look real and your talking about making it real just smaller...A little smaller that is with this one...lol lol lol...

I know its going to be awsomw and I am so glad to be here at the beginning...

Who know's you may inspire me to not shrink those Jenny plan's...lol lol lol...

I dont know about that though because as much as I'm sure you will inspire me it still doesnt make my house or truck any bigger...lol lol lol...[:D]

Tim. Just two words. Room Addition![:D]

BobH -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/22/2008 12:42:57 PM)

Steve FYI I have two pictures of the compass that show good detail. One is from the side so you get the proper shape etc. Let me know if you want it.

smcouch77 -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/22/2008 1:09:27 PM)

Thanks Bob. You can post them here if you like, or email me. I really am going to try to make one that works.
Steve

Stevo here ya go. I hope these help.

JohnF -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/23/2008 1:41:15 AM)

Hey Bob, You haven't forgotten about me have you? That compass is just too cool!

BobH -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/23/2008 4:58:40 AM)

No John I havent. as soon as I get this project finsined ( in the next day or so) I should have time to get on it..

MarvinE255 -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/23/2008 6:54:07 PM)

Which set of plans are you using? Thanks

smcouch77 -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/23/2008 7:19:53 PM)

I wasn't able to come up with any really scale plans in 1/3 scale, so I'm drawing my own using Model Cad. I have the WWI Areo three views which I'm using for a pattern. I also have the Replicraft five views with the markings for this aircraft. I've finished the plan view and wings. I'm working on the side view now. I'm sure I'll have that finished before I finish building the wings.
Steve

smcouch77 -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/24/2008 2:51:31 AM)

I made some progress today. I made patterns in ModelCad and attached them to a stack of 1/8" balsa. I stack cut them using a band saw for the outside cuts and a scroll saw for the inside cuts. It took about one hour to cut the parts for 40 ribs.
I set up a jig on my building board, pin the parts in place, and wrap the cap strips around. I soak the front 1/4 of the strip to help it bend.
If I keep at it I may get to start framing wings this weekend.
Steve

Promises to be a real masterpiece. Looks like you're using CA adhesive for cap strips, how do you prevent glueing the capped rib to the underlying jig? ...........John

smcouch77 -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/24/2008 8:26:32 PM)

I don't put glue on the strip where it crosses the "spars" and the rest is covered with wax paper.
Steve

caribefoto -> RE: 1/3 Scale SE5a Scratch Build (4/24/2008 10:06:52 PM)

Pardon my "are we there yet?" questions. I may not be interpreting your photos correctly. I understand that the underlying jig is raised just enough to accomodate the projection of the cap strips from each side of the rib (overlap, i.e. a 1/8" capstrip on a 1/16" rib = 1/32' projection on each side, in which case the jig would be a 1/32" thick rib shape and at the spar locations thick enough to stand the vertical capstrips against, in this case 1/8"). Do you cover the raised jig and the surrounding lower surface it is mounted on with the same sheet of wax paper, anf if so how do you manage to get the capstrip to position hard against the edge of the rib (gapless)? Hope I haven't made this hopelessly complicated................John
