personally, i kind of prefer that the ama itself is not at events such as these, because, usually, the members present do a much better job representing the ama to the newbs than the staff or any organized approach could ever hope to do. unless, of course, they are all a bunch of overworked by choice sourpusses. lord help us then.

I couldn't help laughing out loud. Thanks Mongo.

Ummmmmm, to answer your basic question......It ain't my job to try to persuade newbies to join the AMA. It's the membership group from Muncie's job to pull that wagon.

Bill, AMA 4720
Again, lets try to keep this one civil.

Then what's the point of having special interest groups ... so their only focus is themselves. Those people in Muncie are the members administrators, that's it. They are not the AMA, the dues paying members are the AMA, it's their org it's THEIR responsibility to give back at any and all chances.

But in regards to any volunteer like an DVP or AVP to have to man a booth at an event NO WAY, they already do the work, why do we need to press these volunteer members, that already volunteer, be requested to sit behind a booth or even drive 1 hour, let alone 3, that benefits AMA member that don't support their organization because they are too busy worrying about the time and effort they have to give to themselves????

If you want anything from the AMA ... make it happen .... you are the AMA. AMA gives us tools, we use tools. If you can't find the time ... then find a member in your club to step to the plate to fill the gap. I applaud you for your efforts Stick .... but you shouldn't ask for more from the people whom already give it in the first place.

you invite newbies to join the org by your actions and treatment of them when they take time to ask you a question. i hope you don't just hit them with the, i get 15 min per plane and five days of solid work story when they do.

i know bill.

the point i am trying to make, is, if these posts were the only way i had of "knowing" you, the sourpuss thing is what is coming across. i am fairly sure, that, that is not what you want to project.

OMG STL,
Yes, we are the AMA. Now with that said, who represents us? HMMMMM? DVP, AVP, well???? Who is better versed to represent the AMA? Certainly not me, or YOU! I do believe that someone from HQ (or the area DVP/AVP) should be present at all sanctioned AMA events! There's that dang word again-sanctioned-just can't seem to get away from it! And don't give me some song and dance about the volunteer junk. Lots of time away from family and friends goes with the territory! That's what it is all about. If you don't want to do it, then just get out of it and don't volunteer anymore. Tired of that lame duck excuse.!!! (Not talking about you, talking about the volunteers) But if the shoe fits.

I represent the hobby! Not the AMA! They can represent themselves and that is why their presence is sorely needed at any and all events.

Unreal. How could you possibly say that AVPs or DVPs are more well versed to represent the AMA than members. AVPs and DVPs are members!!!! They are volunteer members that go the extra mile. Well versed?? Is your local congressman more well versed about your neighborhood than you?? What do you need to know ... tell someone "here is the organization that you can join if you are interested in learning more about model aircraft". Perhaps an application to go with it. Slap a sticker on their shirt like they do at Disneyland?

Also when you say the HQ/AVP/DVP members are at these sanctioned events, what do you expect from them? Nobody's addressed that. Do you expect them to wear an AMA mascot or cheerleading outfit. Seems like some of you want them there .... but to do what? What could they possilby do that you can't? AVPs and DVPs are not slaves to get more revenue in YOUR CLUB.

BTW had a chit chat with the Prez and asked him why AMA doesn't have a MEMBER BASED volunteer event program reps like EAA & AOPA have, well guess what .... it's coming, go figure. But I'm sure members will complain about it as soon as it's delivered, especially the ones that keep asking "what can the AMA do for me".

Hmmm...in this last post of yours AMA reps go the extra mile but in your post just before this one they shouldn't be expected to drive an hour or so. I guess you mean they should ride the bus?

Would you like some syrup with that waffle sir? LOL

Seriously, come on guys, if someone decides to get into this hobby and wishes to be apart of an organization…any organization there isn't much choice...no brain teaser.

I think we are overlooking a more germane issue pointed out by the originator of this thread…why the differential as it relates to Noll and Top Gun and what causes that.

Everyone is skeeered to discuss that I guess. Oh well...

Back to the cat fight...

Waffler? No LCS, I don't think that the EC or AVP's should have to do any more than they WANT to do, they already do ... you seem to want them to do more. Especially when there are PLENTY of other MEMBERS that can do just as much if not more. If anyone wants representation, it's easy as making it happen.

I really don't expect any AMA official (DVP/AVP or otherwise) at any event. They will stay in their little cave with their hands stroking each other. That is exactly my feelings on it. I will not change that view. So, no need to counter. Yes, the DVP/AVP, EC, etc. is better versed in the inner workings of the organization than either you or I. We may have a very few members that know the workings of the AMA inside and out, but I will bet it is not you and it certainly is not me.
Should I want to represent the AMA I would become more educated on the program and then become a CD and then work my way up. But-

Oh, there was a Big-Bird fly-in and the AVP showed his face for about thirty minutes. Really great way to promote the AMA, ya think? Yes, there was a small crowd of non-flyers or spectators, I should say. Several of them were awed by the demonstrations. A few approached the flyers and had question and answer with them. Where was the AMA rep? Gone to his cave. And yes, he could have been included in the conversations. Opportunity missed. Guess what? The HOBBY was well represented, but the AMA was never brought up. Imagine that!

Oh, and one other thing. Don't forget, most of us belong to the AMA cause we want to, not cause we HAVE to...Most of the fliers I know have more insurance than the AMA can provide.

Nice. And it is also nice to see that once you have made up your mind you won't be bothered to be given any facts that might contradict your preconceived ideas.

But do allow me to say as an AVP that gets around to a number of events and spends a good deal of my free time representing my District, I find your comments insulting and based on a complete ignorance of reality.
Gotta Go, need to get back to my cave and do some more stroking!

I can only go on by what I see, I don't believe too much in what I hear or read. Old addage, I think. Maybe, you are an exception, more power to you, and if I insulted you, then...carry on with your business.

I have been in and out of R/C since 1976 and have very seldom seen anyone above club Prez. at functions/events. HMMMM???? Maybe I'm the exception, or maybe I'm the rule? So back to your cave and do some more stroking? If that's what you want to do.[)]
