bluebirdrc -> My First Crawler (4/22/2008 6:33:17 PM)

Hello all:
Here is my first attempt at a crawler.

nitrosportsandrunner -> RE: My First Crawler (4/22/2008 7:20:32 PM)

nice chassis, what tranny are you planning on using?

hands without shadows -> RE: My First Crawler (4/22/2008 9:33:05 PM)

Nice Manta.

Why did you leave so much thread exposed? Are you switching it Jato ends or...?

t9dragon -> RE: My First Crawler (4/22/2008 9:38:30 PM)

Nice work.....................[:D][:D][:D]

bluebirdrc -> RE: My First Crawler (4/22/2008 11:52:46 PM)

Thank you
I am using an Axial Scorpion transmition from Stormer Hobbies for $35.
2 Scorpion differentials for $36 each.
I got the pattern from this sight.

http://offroader5.freeservers.com/templates.html

I am still cutting and trimming.
I changed the upper arms to V shape so the shocks will clear.
To start with it will have rear steering. If I find some competition I will lock down the rear and go with a DIG.

bluebirdrc -> RE: My First Crawler (4/26/2008 5:12:38 PM)

What off the shelf drive shaft, at a local hobby shop will fit the Scorpion trans and axles?

FORDMIKE65 -> RE: My First Crawler (4/27/2008 4:31:40 AM)

I've read on several posts that the Traxxas Stampede driveshafts will work

bluebirdrc -> RE: My First Crawler (4/28/2008 3:42:00 PM)

What gears should I use? What is the largest sper gear I can install?
Thank you

Thankyou

bluebirdrc -> RE: My First Crawler (4/30/2008 1:30:13 AM)

Here are a few updated photos of my project.

bluebirdrc -> RE: My First Crawler (5/3/2008 4:50:10 PM)

OK, I have another question. How much weight to put in the tires?

This question was asked before but I'm confused.
One person uses 7.5oz per front tires only and the other uses 12oz per each front and 9oz for each back.
Pretty wide spreed. Any one els have some input? Please
Thank you
Mike

hands without shadows -> RE: My First Crawler (5/3/2008 6:54:44 PM)

Use whatever amount of weight works best for you. Just try different setups.

Pico Train -> RE: My First Crawler (5/3/2008 10:43:51 PM)

I use 3.5 oz front and rear, works good for me.

bluebirdrc -> RE: My First Crawler (5/4/2008 12:23:18 AM)

I have moved to the next step.
Shocks, a body and weight on the wheels and it will be ready.
Then I will take it all apart and make it pretty.

nomobux -> RE: My First Crawler (5/4/2008 1:18:42 PM)

Lookin good. One thing I would do, is get some split 8 batts and mount on the front axle.

bluebirdrc -> RE: My First Crawler (5/4/2008 4:26:31 PM)

If crawlers normally run at lower AMP draw than other RC vehicle's what capacity do I need.
What size cells are they. Those cells look smaller than sub Cs.
Thanks

bluebirdrc -> RE: My First Crawler (5/9/2008 4:52:01 PM)

Dose any one have any experience with the pivot stile of shock mounting?
Similar to the Revo setup. Dose it work well or not? Just looks like it would be fun.
I don’t have any shocks yet so this would be a good time to set it up.
Thank you
Mike

bluebirdrc -> RE: My First Crawler (5/14/2008 5:42:28 AM)

Getting closer. The shock springs are too strong. I still do not have any weight in the wheeles.
But I can chaise the dog. Of coarse it is a very old and slow dog.

bluebirdrc -> RE: My First Crawler (5/21/2008 12:24:18 AM)

I have more pictures. Went for the droop set up and it really works.
I need a body and some fine tunning and it will be ready.
At least I can have fun with it now.
Mike

How good are your machining skills? Crawling doesn't have to be much more expensive than the price of a donor, wheels/tires, electronics, shocks, and rod ends if you have tools and like to use them.

bluebirdrc -> RE: My First Crawler (5/21/2008 5:04:26 AM)

Unfortunately it cost me more than a AX10 Scorpion RTR from tower hobbies. I did enjoy building it and I didn't shell out all the money at once.
Theres just some thing to doing it your self. My next one I will build from scratch again. Or at least as much as I can with all the parts I had to buy.
I do recommend building your own.
Good Luck
Mike

For the most part if you're looking to buy everything new you're looking at spending at $300 for even the cheapest of crawlers. The two cheapest choices would be the Axial Scorpion RTR or if you can make most of your own parts buy a Wheely King and convert it to a crawler. In the end I'd suggest just saving your dough and buying the Scorpion kit.

misasi -> RE: My First Crawler (5/21/2008 9:47:08 PM)

im pretty good with tools and i think i would be able to pull it of. I also have a stealth tranny from an RC10GT which i was thinking about using if an electric motor will bolt up. I was thinking about making the chassis out of brass tubing. I figured the parts i would need would be the ESC/Motor, shocks, axles and rod ends for all the links. I was thinking about buying the scorpion kit but then i saw this thread. I think it would be pretty cool to make my own if possible.
