AMA's PPP - A viewpoint and a couple questions - 4/22/2008 6:36:59 PM

I've been pretty silent for quite some time due to health reasons. I'd like to express my take on the PPP as well as ask a couple questions about the "partners" stuff.

I have been battling ALS for a couple of years now. As I lost the ability to use my legs, the ability to get to a flying field without infringing on someone else's day became darned near impossible. My models became smaller and smaller and my "field requirements" shrank to the point that now I wheel out the front door and fly on calm evenings. I was going to let my AMA membership lapse because I just didn't see the use for it. I figured I'd just send a small donation to support the hobby I love and that would be that. Well, the Park Pilot Program came alive this year and though it isn't the perfect fit solution, it was and is a good fit for what I do and allows me to still feel like a card carrying contributor to the hobby in general. Why not pay the $58 and be done with it? For the same reason everybody doesn't own a Ferrari, Hummer, or Rolls. I don't need or want all that, but I'd still like to contribute. The PPP alows me to do just that without making me feel like I just threw away money for something I'll never use. I get useful life out of my PPP membership and feel it was well worth the money every evening I roll out the door. (The floor is open for discussion & comments)

Now on to the questions:

I've been looking for someone who flys parkies within about 5 miles of Harpers Ferry, WV. I've written a "partner" as listed on the AMA site to ask if a field or group were known. I'm still awaiting a reply. To all you partners out there, how long do you usually take to respond, or at least acknowledge the e-mail?

Next question is simple. How many partners (on here, of course) have received e-mails from new PPP members? I get the distinct impression that one can hear the crickets chirp in that regard.

Thanks,
Greg S

Well if you are looking for a general question not specific to your area, just try another partner. Could be on vacation, could have gone to spambox, or as fast as people switch emails and so forth. I'm sure that if you resend your mail to more than one person on that list, you'll get an answer.

But keep in mind the program is young. I mean afterall AMA $58 program is over 70 years old and from the rattle in this forum, it too has plenty of bugs, thus the chirping.

Seems to me that the PPP is the major focus at the AMA right now ... so expect more good news to come!

STL,
I agree that just e-mailing another partner is the thing to do, once I'm satisfied I've given ample time for a response. I'm more currious, I guess, if the partners are starting to get questions sent their way, or if they'd feel like they hit the lottery if an e-mail was sent their way, know what I mean.

King-
I got one of them official signed up PPP helpers to try to help with my PPP question right here in this forum. I figure you stand a pretty good chance of having 3-5 of them stop by this thread.

I would get together to fly some PPP with you,
but that whole Texas to West ByGod drive is a real deal killer. )
VA Frank is ... well, in Virginia, he might be able to hook you up with more PPP minded folks in the VA/WV area that could know locals for you. I think his handle is VAFlyer or something like that, I'm sure folks here will let us know what Frank's contact info is.

I was thinking that may be the case. I know it's a young program, but rest assured we're out there

KidEpoxy and KingCrash fly again....LOL! Sounds like a DC Comics in the making!
Thanks for the sentiment!

KingCrash - I'm the partner you sent the email to. Sorry for taking so long to get back, but I sent an email today. Travel, work, club business, and kids, so I haven't had a chance to answer.

Brad,
It's all good. I hope you nor anybody else got the impression I was upset. I was and am not. Life happens. Knowing that, I wait until I feel enough time has passed for someone to see the e-mail and respond. (usually at least a week)

IF I DID COME ACROSS AS BEING UPSET, I AM SORRY.
I tried carefully to express I was currious as to other people's experience being a partner - If you guys were being swamped with e-mails, etc.

Having said that, Have you received many e-mails or was I one of the first?

Greg S

Hey King,
just wondering, did you sign up for Park Pilot in January or after January?

I didn't sign up until March, so technically my membership was already dead. I got that AMA membership reminder e-mail that also touted the new Park Pilot program. Once I saw what it was, it was I decided to renew under that program.

My AMA Number's 871838, last name Stephenson.

Edit....Found the ama conf e-mail.
Here's the date.
Application Type: Renewal - #871838
Date Received: 3/28/2008 11:14:05 PM
