jwest-maxx, first, take off the carb and make sure that the cat's eye opening in the spray bar is pointing straight down, in line with the venturi. Loosen the two slothead screws on the left side of the carb to rotate the entire spraybar assembly. It will look like my photo from the outside. The fuel nipple will be slanted down slightly. While you have the carb off turn the low speed needle until it covers half of the cat's eye opening (when looking in the bottom of the carb) with the throttle wide open. That is a good starting point; you will still need to fine tune it later.

I started my engine the first time with the high speed NV out three turns. This was a pretty rich setting with my engine. I then gradually turned the needle in about 1/8 of a turn at a time. Wait a few seconds for the change to take effect and then quickly pinch the fuel line. Stop leaning the engine when you get no increase in rpm when pinching the line. If it sags open the NV up immediately. The "no change" pinch setting is a little rich of peak, which is good. When the engine is in the plane you will still want to hold the nose up and do the pinch test again. If it sags with the nose up after a quick pinch of the fuel line I would richen it a few clicks to be safe. Engines lean out in the air and when the tank empties.

When you get the high speed NV at the "no change" pinch setting, go to idle for several seconds and then to full throttle. If it coughs, hesitates and belches smoke shut down the engine and turn the low speed needle in an 1/8 of a turn. If it just dies open the low speed NV 1/8 of a turn. Start the engine, go to full throttle, then to idle and repeat the process until your transition is smooth.

Then, re-test the high speed NV once again using the pinch test. You may need to tweak it a bit. And finally, re-test the low speed NV one more time. It's a bit of a back and forth process since the two needle effect each other. Once the transition is good the engine should be adjusted well enough to fly. Don't forget to do the nose up test before taking off.

Let me know if you still have questions.

David

I've found that if you point the fuel nipple at the rear mounting hole it will be just about right.

Also, each time you adjust either the high end or the low end you must go back and re-adjust the other end. One seems to influence the other. Move back and forth between the high end and low end settings until it is tuned right and then leave it alone. All this is, of course, after the engine is broken in.

doubledee
