I recently purchased an O.S. 15 LA and I cannot get it to run. It ran once for about 3 seconds then quit and will occasionaly run for a couple of revolutions. Sometimes it wil kick over and get stuck TDC. Eventually it will flood out or the glow starter will get too weak. I've followed the instructions in the maual and no luck. I've tried overly rich settings and of course it floods quickly and I've tried leaner settings (1 1/2 to 2 turns vs. the recommended 3). Is it possible I've got a lemon?

If an engine has good compression, a good glow plug, and good fuel, it will fire and run. The rest is getting it adjusted.

We'd start out with the engine dry of fuel. Gently close the high-speed needle valve and then open it about 2 turns. Open the throttle to full. Choke the engine until you see fuel arrive at the carburetor, then turn the engine over one more revolution. Remove your finger from the carb and briskly flip the propeller several times to distribute the fuel in the engine. Leave the throttle opened to full. Now connect the glow plug battery and briskly flip the engine to start it. It should fire and run.

Smaller engines that are not broken-in and not properly-set need to be started at full throttle (or above 3/4) to allow them to get running. Because they're not broken-in and not set, they will likely not idle at all. Because breakin must be done at full-throttle, starting it there won't hurt a thing.

It would be almost certain that there's nothing wrong with your engine.

Still can't get it to run. Would using a hotter plug or maybe an electric starter help?

A different plug won't work if you already have a good plug. "Hot" or "Cold" plugs help you tune an engine at full throttle. Neither will make starting easier.

An electric starter may help, but if the engine's not set up correctly first, they will just spin an engine endlessly.

As we stated above, if you have good fuel, a good glow plug, and good compression, starting will happen. If it doesn't, it's due to technique. You may need to seek an experienced modeler to help you with your engine.

First I want to say thanks for the help. Now with that said, I finally got her to run this morning and here is how I think I did it. With all of the attempted running I had tried early on with a weak glow starter, alot of fuel and oil had accumulated in the bottom of the engine. This was mixing with the new fuel and making it unuseable. So, here is what I did. I pulled everything out, glow plug, fuel lines, etc. and turned the engine upside down over night and spun the prop numerous times to ensure everything was out of the engine. This mornig, I put everything back together used a heat gun ( saw this in another thread for helping with really cold engines) to heat the cylinder/head, put in fresh fuel and then did as you said, choke until fuel gets to carb flip one more time, attach glow starter and then flip. Nothing. Flip one more time and she ran a full tank of fuel. [:)] Thanks so much for your help. This is only my second glow engine and I'm still learning. Hopefully someone else can learn from this too. The engine has got to be absolutely dry as a bone. Thanks again.

Awesome news.[sm=thumbs_up.gif] I have had to teach myself the little tricks to getting a glow engine to respond properly. I have an advantage in that I have a degree in diesel mechanics. I simple way to clear a flooded engine is to disconnect the fuel line and spin it over with the starter motor , usually it will run briefly and die then you are back at square one but with a warm engine to help with starting. some engines really need a starter motor others are more forgiving. A good hot glow driver is a must. I have taken to using a power panel myself. sometimes I have to turn up the amps to well on the high side of the green to get an engine to start depending on a lot of factors. And a brand new engine is the worstest most stubborn kind. [sm=lol.gif]

Well, I've got about 7 tanks of fuel through it, but I've noticed that fuel is leaking from the top of the crankcase coverplate. should I try tightening the screws or remove it and add RTV?

If the coverplate is leaking a bit, loosen all four screws and re-tighten them evenly. That should cure any leakage.

The previous posts are very helpful. Am I safe to Asume the intructions are the same for a .15 FP ? I am having the same issues. I do know that the previous ower put in a new conecting rod. Is there anything that could have been put in backwards piston,head, backplate, rod? Also on a engine like that, what is the factory, or starting setting for the airbleed screw on the front right side of the carb.

You would debug a .15FP in the same manner as a .15LA.
