I put my one wing into a fence post after dead sticking. It was very avoidable, but thought I cleared it. Well, took out about 8 inches of leading edge and two ribs. How the hell do I make a new leading edge? This will be my first rebuild. it's a tower 40. thanks!

You can purchase leading edge stock from your LHS or Towers.

If its not a standard stock Great Planes makes a special sander you can use to make your own. You use the existing LE to set the pattern then added the special sandpaper and sand square stock to shape.

I have repaired broken LE's by putting square stock in the area that was missing and after the ribs were all fixed as well. Simply use a hand held planner to remove the LARGE amount of wood that is there and then use a had block to sand the LE to match the curvature of the rest of the wing...... IT WORKed and no unusual handling characteristics, good as new!

Like previous posts said, you can buy stock LE material, or just glue in square stock and sand it. Either way, when you glue in the replacement piece, make sure you cut all the mating surfaces at about a 45* angle. This will maximize your gluing surface while maintaining as much lengthwise shear strength as possible. Good luck with your rebuild.

I dinked a spot on my trainer's leading edge. While not as large as yours, mine only spanned the width of 2 ribs.

You're on the right path with the stock LE and then sheeting around it. I had a couple of extra spots I had to glue a little extra balsa in, then sanded everything smooth. The process actually went much faster than I anticipated.
