Hello fellow SPADaholics!

After my completion and test fly of my first SPAD, I have decided to build another. I want to build a big trainer type plane, like the Senior Telemaster. A good 'workhorse' for cross country, bomb drops, etc, etc. I'm thinking something in the 8 foot wingspan range, and a 90 or so 2 stroke. I'd like to incorporate four servos in the wings, 2 aileron, 2 flap.

Here's my question: Can fowler type flaps be incorporated into coroplast? Would it be a waste as far as flight performance, vs. regular flaps? What I mean is, do the fowler flaps work differently than regular hinge type of flaps, or are they used more for looks? Thanks for your time!

The advantage of fowler flaps is that the flap not only moves down, but it moves back. This gives you a longer cord AND a higher camber. A simple hinge flap will only give you a higher camber. In my opinion, you may not need flaps at all. If you are building a trainer type, flat bottom, high drag plane, your flaps may be more a thing of beauty than of function. The main purpose of flaps on an airplane is to allow the pilot to make a steeper approach to landing without increasing airspeed. Don’t get me wrong, I love flaps! I am building a DC-3 with an 80" wing now. It does not call for flaps but you better believe I am putting them on! Just don't think you have to have them… Put them on for looks if you want them. I would not spend the extra money on the fowler flaps though.

I did about what you are talking about with my big SPAD cub. I haven't put the flap servos in yet just stuck some wire in so I could bend in 15 to 20* of flap . I like the way flaps fly super short TO and approaches. You can check it out in my photos. Dosn't seem to me that the time to make fowler flaps would be worth it the other is so easy. Steve
