At 80k blew the tranny in my 01 intrepid, had it rebuilt now it downshifts hard on rolling stops and tranny place is trying to skip out on the waranty. monday's the 4th time back, this time there taking it apart. Last time they only changed the filter and fluid, all other times nothing. They killed 1/2 tank of gas in only 80 miles but couldn't find anything wrong. Think I'm getting hosed and it sucks. I can also really feel the down shift when I'm not even on the gas, goes in hard. For a little while it wouldn't shift untill 2500 rpm's, but they said nothings wrong. The double A place sucks, and I'm a sucker. Anyone know what I can do if they can't fix it? It's going to take a few years, depending on how much i drive it, but it's going to eat itself.

I have a '99 Chrysler 300M which shares the same transmission. A couple of places to check out are lhforums.net and 300mclub.org. Usually it is caused by air in the lines, check the fluid level while on flat ground with the engine running and in park. Usually people are about a quart low which causes this. It could also be that the mechanic didn't install the tranny filter correctly, this could also cause air to get into the system. As a last resort you could have the dealership re-flash the TCM, I have read about a couple of cases where this solved the hard 4-3 downshift bump. Also be sure that the mechanic only used ATF+4, anything else will destroy the transmission clutches. Hope this helps

Something else just went through my mind, you can reset the TCM by pulling a fuse in the under hood distribution block labeled TCM for about 30 min. Let me know how it works out for you.

No luck. Got on a strait part of the street, hit the breaks and around 5mph hit the gas and it hit hard. Before it was rebuild I could never feel a shift. Now I get to take it back for the 4th or 5th time. Woo-hoo I don't have a car for a few days, at least no one can ask me for a ride

Thanks for the idea

Sorry I couldn't help you out. If its any consolation every once an a while I get bump while it is still in first and I decelerate then accelerate, I think it has to do with the play in the driveline and the torque converter grabbing.

Any idea helps. It wouldn't bother me if it only happened when I hit the gas hard between shifts. It takes a full second or more, then a jump into gear. I was thinking maybe they didn't fill the torque converter up enough before putting it in. They even told me that they got some bum parts, I forget what part he said, but they didn't do anything when the car went into the shop after I was told that. I just hope it doesn't die when I drive almost 300 miles one way to upstate NY next month. Since it's mostly highway I think I'll be fine, besides a fully loaded car. Only one way to find out...

Thanks for the ideas

Your welcome. I hope your trip goes well. If the fluid type and level is correct and you tried resetting the TCM there isn't much that you can do, your sort of at the mercy of your mechanic. It may be something like one of the solenoids sticking, but that is getting into the valve body. I hope all works out well for you.

I think there trying to back out of the work. Live and learn. Next time I buy a few rounds and bring a friend or 2 for junk parts, save money on my headache

The shop thinks it's the mounts, but that only covers the hard shifts. It wasn't covered by the waranty but there doing it for free. I think they should of seen the mounts where bad when they rebuilt it. I get my car back today or monday so I'll have to see what's going on from there. I think I'm going to have to suck it up and take it in the tail pipe. Yes, I have no faith in them anymore.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully the mounts help the problem, but as you said this isn't going to help the hesitation issue.

hmmm. out off all the forums i find this one....

I have a 95 intrep and am ALSO having trans issues. Was about to go for a flush but took it to a local tranny shop and the ran it pluged into a comp. Said the reason why it would either 1; not shift out from 2nd was having to do with the a preasher leak in 2nd?!?!

Not sure exactly but what happens is it will some times NOT shift or either slip really badly (acts like its in neutral but its still in gear)

just a hair over 160K and the engine runs fine... just the tranns thats giving my problems

Poo, I used to work at a tans shop. That trans (A604) is all electronically controlled. There's no mechancal governor or throttle pressure control. So if it shifts when it should with no flare or slip my guess would be it was rebuilt using aftermarket clutches. We were having troubles with those units just like you desrcibe, and once we swiched to using only Chysler corp. kits they worked fine. As long as it's not a nasty harsh up or down shift it should be fine.
Soft shift= slip apply= wear
firm shift=firm apply= less wear
Maybe you can chirp 2nd now !...j/k
Have they installed Sonnax accumulater pistons? They help. We ALWAYS used them in the L/R and 2/4.
Another thought, They could have the accumulater piston springs mixed up. IIRC the underdrive ACC. has 2 springs and the rest have 1. Anything accumulater related can be checked by dropping the valve body(not a big deal).
BUT if the trans doesn't operate to your satisfaction they have to fix it if you have a warrantee. Back when we were having problems with those things we went as far as ordering factory remans to make the customer happy.

iexeon, you need a rebuild or reman or low mile junker. Those Chrysler solenoid bodys are cool because with a scan tool you can actually see the measure of fluid required to apply any clutchpack.
If as you say the scan reveiled excessive volume in second, and it slips, and has 160k on it I'd say the writings on the wall!
Smell the fluid, doe's it stink ? Is it black? Sorry...it's toast!
