This may be a bit off topic but it does apply to models and model building as well as other things. I have often run into situations where I need to repair a plastic model or other plastic item but have not found any information to help me identify the type of plastic that needs to be repaired or the correct glue to repair the plastic. How do you find that information? I have often tried CA and epoxy only to find that they either cure on the surface or do nothing but make a mess. I have tried Acetone thinking it would weld/melt the plastic for form the repair but again no repair is made. As a last resort I use the acetone glues but since Acetone itself did not work the acetone based glues do not work either.

Can someone tell me how to identify the particular pastic and composites and the glue that might fix it?

Thank you.

if this 'plastic' is really acrylic then you don't use acetone you need weld-on. MEK would also work, but it's one of them nasty carcinogens.

I have not been able to find Weld On around here as I have looked for Weld On #3 to weld plexiglass but no luck locally. MEK is or was still available at Ace Hardware so will try that.

My real question is how to first identify the type of plastic and then how to find out what will weld/glue/repair it?

Thank you for the info.
