I am getting ready for summer and have a Saito 1.50 mounted in the T-craft. I would like to go with an APC 16 x 10. What would you suggest for break in and performance? BTW, what fuel?

I need some answers too and will listen in to any replies What RPM is the 150 happiest at? I fly my models at 6800MSL and I'm gonna run the 30% helo fuel that Horizon suggests.

I've been flying a Saito 1.5 in an Ace 4-120 bipe for ~4 years. Mine was purchased when the 1.5 was fairly new on the market. I've heard that the later version II has a bit lower compression and is more tolerant. The instructions said to use 5 - 15% nitro and at least 18% oil. Also said to use some castor oil in the mix. Accordingly, I tried the Red Max 15% 4-stroke fuel that I had been using in my smaller 4-strokes when I lived and flew at 4000 feet msl. The thing kicked back and threw props. I put a C&H ignition on it and a compression-lowering shim under the jug. It ran beautifully on that setup for several years.

Recently, I ran it on a 16:1 mixture of 95 octane gas and Klotz. Ran good on that but the power was down. So as an experiment, I went to 10% 2-stroke glow fuel without the shim. Ran well, more power than the gas. As a further experiment I took off the ignition and ran it on the same fuel but as a glow engine. Runs well, turns an APC 16x8 ~8700 rpm. Idles good revs right up. Maybe it's just now broken in. Go figure.....

Don't the instructions that came with your engines tell you what fuel and prop to use for break in?

Cheers,

CR

Chook, I have a Saito 150 in a 1/4 scale lazer using a APC 16X8 and it pulls it around with ease.

Don't wanna highjack Chook's thread here ... Mine was bought slightly used. I just slapped a 16x8 APC on it with a new OS "F" plug and flew it with 10% ducted fan fuel (w/18% synthetic oil). It seems happy a clam; I've never tach'd it, only needled it for good "smoke" and go fly. That was several hundred flights ago in my (plans-built) UltraSport1000 which I just recently retired after nearly a 1,000 flights. [;}
Independent of what the instructions say (I don't have a copy of them), I was just wondering what RPM it's *supposed* to be happy at.

My saito 150 runs well at a slightly rich 8700 rpm w/ an APC 16X8 and 15% nitro Wildcat fuel.

I have used the cool power 15% with great success on other engines, I will have to give it a try on this one. 16 x 8 works also, although I would like to keep the rpm's down a little. Thanks Guys! MrMike, your not hi-jacking my thread, it belongs to all here.

Being still curious about this "happy RPM" thing, I cheated and found an archived copy of the 150 manual on the Horizon web site. Figure 5 therein shows an RPM range from 2000 to 10,500 for the 150. Among 3 different categories (Sport, Scale, & Aerobatics) there is an amazing range of props: from a 14 x 14 all the way up to an 18 x 8!
I know on a 4 cycle engine max torque typically occurs at a lower RPM than maximum horsepower. From what I'm reading here in this thread I'm thinking I can infer the greatest amount of torque is around 8K. But then there's the other variable of nitro percentage and that kicks in the glow plug heat range question!! I think I'll just continue with my 16 x 8 APC and maybe slip on a 17 x 8 just for grins.

It all depends on what you want out of the plane and the type of plane. My bipe has lots of drag doesn't fly very fast, so the prop doesn't unload much in the air except on a downline, where I throttle back anyway. I could go to a 17x6 without much fear of over-revving it and possibly gain better vertical performance thru greater thrust. If your airplane has less drag and/or needs to fly faster to perform well, a smaller disk and more pitch may be the answer. In any event, revving it much over the horsepower peak isn't any use and increase the wear and tear on the engine.

Cheers,

CR
