I've got the Mini-Extra (teal) with a blue OS-10LA in it... Howdyalilke that? The motor color-matches the airplane (can't find blue OS-10LA's any more).

I fly this with a 8x4 wood prop and 20% nitro... it flies OK, but it's not a fire breather. It's a sport plane, good for boring holes in the sky, but I like it.

I tried to put a 15 in at first, but it didn't look like I'd be able to do it without a lot of hacking - not much room where they had originally specified a .074 for that thing. How about you guys with the 15's up front? Can you send a picture of the engine installation? I'm wondering if the plane turned out tail heavy or not.

I might try a 7x6 on the 10 to see if the speed improves.

Bob

Actually my Magnum .15XL fit great, i think i only had to sand about 1/32" off both sides of the opening for the engine, even the pre drilled bolt holes in the 1/4" ply fit. I used the stock 2oz tank and AUW was 29oz dry, CG was perfect with my 300mah 4 cell RX pack mounted at the back of the canopy opening. My radio went for a crap ( all fixed now ) and caused my lil extra to go in hard, the snow soften the blow so it's now in the rebuilding stages. The only hard part was making a 1/4 exhaust extender so the muffler would clear the fuse without any hacking.

Kerwin,

As a thought on your Sig SE, before you change engines, try going with a 12x4 prop instead. I went from a 11x6 to a 12x4 in my Twist 40 and the difference was amazing. You may find that you don't need to change engines after all.

Just a thought,

Bob

Hi Microspring,

Thanks for that recap. Sorry about your plane - that happened to my LT-40.

As for the exhaust, I had to do the same thing with my OS-10 to get the muffler to clear the fuse.

Hmmm, I wonder what I was doing wrong that made my .15 so hard to fit on the Herr mini?

Bob

What he said the .15 is only 1 mm wider than the .10 in the LA series....Rog

Sorry, i know this is off topic but i'm happy to say that my TWIST will do the same with a TT PRO.46, it will take off vertically right out of my hand. ( broke the gear off one day ) Tons of power and it's just under 5lbs.

For that OS .10 try a 7X4 or 8X3, lot of difference with
the RPM up where it belongs.
Rob,is that a symetrical LG ?

Bummer. Looks like it wasn't a good day for Li'l Extra's.

Took mine off on the maiden - relaxed the elevator and leveled out at 3' to build up speed before starting to climb and it went into a viscous double snap roll to the right after flying level for about 150' with no control input. Tore the wing off, cracked the aft half of the fuselage and stripped the gears on both aileron servo. I did notice the parts that broke loose - especially the wing hold down plate - had glue joint failure, not wood failure. Surprisingly there was no damage to the wing or forward fuselage. Where it took the impact on the nose only the prop broke - there was a lot grass and dirt all around the engine but the cheeks came out intact. Even the nylon hold down bolt sheered off flush with the tee-nut like it was supposed to.

Luckily mine is an easy rebuild and I should have it out to re-maiden in a couple of weeks. Not sure what caused it to snap like that - we think it may have been hit, but Berg receivers are also good at blocking interference. We'll probably never know - just one of those things.

Hi Hogflyer,
Sorry about the loss, but glad that it's rebuildable.

I'm gonna guess that you had a .15 in it... mine only has a .10LA - but I did notice one thing. The ailerons were very twitchy (I was a bit surprised) even for such a small airplane and power plant. I had to dial in a fair amount of expo to tame it down. The elevator and rudder seemed OK, but the ailerons were sensitive.

I wonder if that is what you might have been seeing... just a thought.

Bob -

Actually an OS .10 FP w/ MAS 7 X 4 for the maiden, and it was airborne in around 75' - 100' on grass, which I guess is an OK distance. My plan is to replace the FP with an OS .10 FSR after I can get some bench time on it, then after about 25 flights add a tuned pipe (once its well broken in). Since I was expecting the ailerons to be sensitive due to all that area, I had -25% expo dialed in (Futaba 7C transmitter) and the throws set exactly to the manual.

Not sure what got to it i the snap roll, but is was one of the best double snaps I've been at the sticks for - intentional or not.

Does anybody know if the Sig AeroKoke Violet will match the AeroKoke Light Sig/Herr uses? I can't find the light on either Sig's or Herr's website, and Tower only shows the standard. I'd hate to have to pay the LHS $18.00 for a roll of each - that would be half the cost of a kit from tower and I'd be better off getting another one just for the fuselage if covering will cost $36.00.

Thanks for the suggestion, hogflyer. I was using a 8x4 prop and that seemed to load the motor down, even though it is a recommended prop. I'll try that 7x4 to see how it revs up...
