Hey Somiss

If it isn't too late, can you post some pictures of it in the bones? Just for us overly-curious people?

Thanks,

Bob

Ok, for our members who enjoy such things, nekkid pictures of the Lil' Extra. You will notice that she's well built! I remembered that I bought a K&B .18 sometimes back and never used it so it's mated to the Extra. Also. please note, that with a little help from a flex shaft on my Dremel, There's room for the rx battery and a Kraft-Hayes 6 oz slimline tank.
I've read that the K&B is not a powerhouse but should do well in the Extra. I can even use the pre-drilled engine mount holes on the K&B. I'm considering moving the rudder and elevator servos to the tail to help with balance even though the K&B is not that heavy.
Ok, now it's time to get the covering irons hot. More pictures to come if you folks want some.

Frank, a couple of years back, I was taken in by Mecoa's advertising claims about the K&B .18's performance. Bought one for a Combat Mustang, but bench runs showed that the engine was a bit of a dog, and I threw it into my "disapointment drawer". Lately, I'v considered replacing my Enya 11, which is on a Lil Extra. (The 11 has plenty of power, I just wanted to see the difference with something that could swing a 8x4 prop.) Project is on the back burner, but I think that the K&B will be fine for this application. The limiting performance factor, for the K&B is the exhaust system. With a small mousse can replaceing the rear half of the muffler, my K&B runs about 16,600/16,700 on 10 or 15 % nitro. Very quiet ! Prop is an older (pre G3) MAS 8x4. Anxious to hear how your set-up does. ........................... George K.

Thanks for the info, George! How did you attach the mousse can to the K&B's muffler?
I read the instructions for the K&B and was surprised to see that they(Mecoa) say that the K&B has a mixture needle as mine is an air bleed carb. I also laughed when they said that an aftermarket exhaust system would void the warranty! That's a little chicken-t!(Or that yellow stuff on top!)
Anyway, I think that I would be happy with 16,600-700 rpm! Unlimited verticals just like my deceased full sized Extra with it's OS .46.

A piece of aluninum bar stock and about 20 min. of lathe work to make the adapter. Bellmouth in front, & an extended pipe on the rear, about an inch or so, if I remember correctly. Also an alum. retainer to match the rear of can. A piece of #2 all-thread holds it all together.I have it sealed, & assembled, but if you wish, I'll take it down for pics & measurements. The can is a 1/2 oz size of "body spray" from Walmart. If you get the same can, one word of caution. DON'T rinse out the can with hot water while in the house. You & the house insides will smell like "foo-foo" juice for the following 2 or 3 days .......................... George K,

Ahh! That was great! There's nothing better than a few good nudie shots of your true love sprawled out all over the bed... Just makes me want to go home and rip the covering off from mine! -On a more serious note, the structure look a lot like the Four Star series of kits.

George, thank you but you left me when you said lathe work as I don't have access to one. I certainly admire you folks with lathe access and ability.
Catracer, you're right about the 4-Star heritage. Unless I'm asked to stop posting nekkid pictures, I'll send more shots of the progress. A friend commented about how the covering was removed without traces of old covering. Well. I won't take credit for that. It was the Sig covering that sort of laid there and was not bonded to the wood.

I've seen a lot of information on building mousse-can mufflers for the larger engines, using specific cans, & thin-wall conduit, but nothing for the small stuff. I'd cut out an adapter for you, but my present show is in a bit of turmoil right now. Lathe & most of my other stuff is across the country in a "u-store-it joint". If the house sells, I'll be moving out soon. However, gonna be a long time before I get settled in & need that engine. If you want, just trade me your stock muffler for mine. Be aware, I've made no attempt to tune this unit; just wanted to get something to run close to the same RPMs of the unmuffled engine (16,900). PM me is you're interested. ........ George K.

Well, better late than never! I flew my Lil Extra for the first time yesterday. I'll post some pics later. This aircraft flies like the big one! I lost the right aileron servo on the second flight which caused a high pucker factor but I got it down in one piece. The K&B .18 is plenty of power thanks to George, who sent me his mousse can muffler to use. This hobby is made up of great people, like George, and that's why I'm still in R/C after 48 years! I'm using a 9/4 MA prop cut down to 8/4.
The radio is a JR 9303 2.4ghz tx, 6100E rx, 4 Hitec 65's on the flight controls and a JR 241 on throttle. I'm using a 5 cell 720nimh battery pack. All up weight is 36 ozs dry. The K&B's short prop shaft prevents a spinner(grrrr!). The battery is in the canopy and the rudder is mounted underneath the fuselage at the tail and I use cable drive. The elevator servo is also in the tail and I use a short length of 1/32" wire for a pushrod.
I originally used flaperons but they are bot needed on the Extra. It lands like a dream.
