At the Toledo show this April I bought the OMP Yak 65 ARF with a YS 1.10 engine. Plane went together very well and was completed without problems. I'm using Hitec 645 servos for control surfaces and a Hitec 81 for the throttle. The included hardware was mostly adequate and I did only minor upgrades that are not worth mentioning. In short, the airplane came out looking (and flies) as good or better than anticipated. Here's my problem:
1. No experience in running a 4-stroke engine, have run only a good gallon of 20/20 fuel through it 2. Engine is running rich as it should, still adjusting low end needle as suggested in manual 3. Idle is unreliable with firing misses, especially after removing glow plug driver 4. Engine and front fuselage shaking at alarming amplitudes at idle and higher throttle (appears to be flexing, tightly secured bolts) 5. Engine run time only 6-7min on tank that came with ARF (350cc)
Again, flight performance is astounding, very predictable, easy to hover, knife edge, spin etc. The engine only needs 1/4 to 1/2 throttle, impossible to land at high idle due to the power available. My impression is that the YS is too much engine for this plane and that the front of the plank is not stiff enough to take the vibrations the engine generates. Although impressed with the power of the YS I'm nonplussed with the shaking and the high fuel consumption - I had bought this as less fuel thirsty powerplant vs. an OS 1.20 for example. Would appreciate any comments and help, thanks!
Herb, I got your emails to the OMP website and answered from there. I run botht he YS 110 and OS 120 and I think the OS is more fuel economical than the YS. Don't get me wrong I love my YS but I need to run 20% nitro in the YS and I run 10% in the OS. The OS has a tad more power than the YS also. Check your emails.
Mike

I run 30% in my 110's, 3 of them. The old fx will run longer than any similar sized engine on fuel, mine will go 30 minutes on 14 oz. I have one of the newers 110S and it ususes considerably more fuel and has more power. There is nothing wrong with the power of the old 110 and i have many gallons through them. if you are sounding rich, and it wants to die at an idle, and the low speed needle seems rich no matter where you put it, try turning the regulator in 1/4-1/2 turn. this will make less fuel pump through the motor.

The new OS 120 is a perfect match for this plane. To me it is probably the best engine for the plane. I am wondering how a OS 91FX would do. Considering I think that motor is lighter than the 120. I had a 91 in the H-9 Funtana (Yellow one) and it would hover that plane great. But for now I am keeping the 120 on there. I get about 12-13 minutes of flight time. I have got this thing to do inverted flat spins and making it climb!!! And trust me I have stress test this bird! It isnt coming apart!

Hey Constrictor, Instead of the OS 120AX, go for a Webra 120 and a mousse can. That should get ballastic thrust out of a hover. I just ran my old worn out Webra 120 with a webra header and a 10oz mousse can on 15% fuel with a wood Master Scimitar 16x6 and got a top end of 10470 steady with absoutly instant throttle response.

Mike, the Prop I'am useing is the APC 17X4W . The altitude at our field is about 3800 AGL. With the OS AX 120 set a little on the rich side we are getting 9200 rpm, engine just broken in ( I run one gallon through my glow engines before mounting and flying them) When I get to the field to fly I do not like any surprizes, with the engine. Have got the new APC 16.5X5W, but due to all the Windy Spring days we have had, 20 to 30mph avg. every day. I have not been out to try this Prop (16.5X5W) The Old Yak 54 has the OS 108 FSR Pulling a 16X4W APC Prop. The Yak in the enclosed pictures is the one used by OMP to direct people to the Instructionmanual for the 65" Yak 54 with the blue foam core fuse. have been flying Her since Spring of 2004, and she is still flying.

Hey that old Yak is famous then! Thanks for the tips on the new APC props. I'll have to hunt some down myself and try them out. I'm using either the APC or Xoar 17-6 on the 120. I've used the Vess 17-6 as well and that's a great prop, just a little pricey I think.
