This Plane is sold by Nitro Models and Banana Hobbies.. (amongst others)

Just purchased one of these.. Thought it would be nice to start a build thread here for it as I didnt see it anywhere else..
Please feel free to add to this if you have interest..

Here are a couple pics of the build for those interested..

Just a note here.. I've been pleasantly supprised with the quality of this plane.. I really didnt expect too much for the $$ but the deeper I get into building it the better it looks.. This comment does not apply to the instruction manual regretfully..

A word about Banana Hobbies I think should be mentioned here as well.. I've read several posts about them being "ripoffs".. This opinion greatly differs from my own!! I've had nothing but positive experiences with them to date..

<< gets down off the soapbox..

Here is the mysterious elevator bellcrank that is shown in the manual but never specified or defined.. This assembly can be ordered from the following website..

http://www.airborne-models.com/index.asp

Here is the World Models web page that describes the items available

http://www.theworldmodels.com/para/products/accessoriesdetail.php?id=26&subcat=0

NOTE: If you install one of these, do so before installing the horizontal stabilizer.

and here are some pics of the installed bellcrank..

Update on the elevator pushrod/bellcrank system..

Once the elevators and control horns were installed and the pushrods from the bell crank to the control horns were made, cycling the servo showed that down elevator worked fine but the up elevator caused the pushrod to flex inside the fusealage..

Solution was to fabricate and install a pushrod guide about 1/2 way down the fusealage.. See pics of the completed installation..

Here are a couple of other helpful tid-bits for building this plane..

While the manual really doesnt tell you, it's better to assemble the main landing gear in the fusealage, then assemble and install the fuel tank before epoxying the wing bar tube into the fusealage.. You can do it the other way, but its better this way.

The the firewall to engine drive hub face dimension was 8 7/8" for my plane with an OS .91 4 stroke.. This left me with a .100" clearance between the back of the spinner plate and the cowl.. But this was for my installation.. install the cowl and measure to be sure..

Hey Mr67Stang

Thanks for stopping by..

Hopefully I'll have a "break-in day" next week sometime.. Waiting for a Slimline Pitts muffler for the .91 4 stroker to get here.. Have a few more things to wrap up the build in the meantime, but its all going really good..

Expecting to maiden the plane in about 3 weeks or so if the weather holds here, and a report will follow.. Not sure about video, but we'll see..

Rich

It looks great with the inverted mount engine.

How about a pic of the muffler?

Hi opjose :

Thanks for stopping by..

Here is a pic of the Slimline muffler for the plane. It's also available with a smoke option.. The pic is of a Saito .91 but the O.S. .91 muffler looks pretty much the same.. I just couldnt see chopping a big hole in the cowl for the stock O.S. muffler and having it stick out the side at that odd angle, not to mention getting fuel/oil all over the side of the model..

The web site is www.slimlineproducts.com

Thanks, I didn't see the muffler/exhaust exit in your pictures so I was wondering as to what the cutout looks like.

The inverted engine head looks good the way you have it.

Hi opjose

The exhaust/cooling air exit will be an approximatly 1 1/8 by 2 rectangle where the 2 exhaust stacks come thru.. nothing too fancy there, but you need to have an opening large enough at the back end to allow the cooling air thats come in from the front to exit the cowl.. I havent put the cutout in the Extra yet as the muffler is still in transit.. I have attached a couple of pix of my Cessna 310 that also has Pitts mufflers and the opening that I put in those cowls to let the cooling air exit the cowling.

Ah, so you cut the tubes.

No wonder I couldn't see the exhaust exits!

Thanks.

opjose:

On the Cessna 310, cutting the exhaust stacks is necessary to allow the cowl to slide over them.. Aftermarket extensions are available that allow you to tap the inside of the cut stack and screw extensions back in after the cowls are installed. Hopefully I wont have to cut the stacks for the Extra.. The cowl looks big enough and appears flexible enough to be installed without cutting the stacks.. I'll update this thread with the installation on the Extra after it arrives (hopefully tomorrow afternoon)
