TakingFlight96 -> Warbirds and Classics over the Midwest (4/29/2008 11:37:31 PM)

Has anyone been to Warbirds and Classics over the Midwest in Fond Du Lac, WI ? Me and my dad love warbirds, he named me after the Allison engine used in the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk,he was working on at the time (he used to be a aircraft mechanic), so, warbirds are real special to the both of us. So, me and him thought this could be a wonderful father/daughter bonding time. Any information on the show would be greatly appreciated.

Hello all,

The "Warbirds and Classics over the Midwest" event is a must on my list. Many of the top builders and pilots from all over the midwest were at the inaugural event last year. They put on a great dinner for the pilots. The field is 850' long about 300' wide and is as smooth as a billard table. Tons of spectaters. Great burgers and brats served all day. Check out who has already pre registered for this years event. You will recognize many of the names from the pages of various RC magazines. Just log onto www.midwestwarbirds.com and check it out. The slideshow from last year will give you an idea of the calibur of the event.

RZ,

Thanks for the information. I saw the slideshow and was amazed at the variety of the planes. Gee, I wish our field was "billard table" smooth [:D]

I plan on coming over with the crew from Minnesota. They went last year and could not say enough praise about it. It's the weekend after our event in Owatonna MN. So it'll be a busy week for me!

I have a question about the event. It sounds like it's a giant scale event. How strict are the rules on that? I have my Pica Mustang to bring but I also have a 70" Hellcat that I'm finishing a conversion to electric power. Its still large but most d not consider it giant scale and not IMAA for sure.

I'm just wondering what I should plan on bringing.

bassman,

If I end up going on Friday, I'll be sure to stop by and say hi. It looks like a pretty good lineup for pilots, a lot of the names sound very familiar. From what I've read from everybody on here, and saw on the website, It'll surely be a great time !

While trying to figure out our budget and plan for the event, we were figuring the overall cost of the trip ; when my dad brought up the question - Is their a food fee ? Is that included in the $3.00 admission ? If so how much is the fee.

takingflight,

the $3.00 a car load is to get into the event. food and soda is extra i cant remember what the food cost is seems like it was around couple bucks for a burger or brat, i just looked at the sign last time out there but am drawing a blank to what the prices were [8|] old age setting in LOL.

For Giant scale are you going by the 80" wingspan? Just wondering if I can bring my 70" Hellcat that I converted to electric.

Thanks,

Steve

Just a quick question - The event lasts for 3 days, is one day better then the other ? What day is the raffle mentioned on the website ?
Thanks.

There will be two raffles: one for the general public and one for registered pilots. Pilots are welcome to participate in the general public raffle, but the general public will not be allowed to participate in the Registered Pilot’s Raffle. Drawings for the pilot raffle will be on Saturday between 3pm-5pm. Drawings for the public raffle will be held on Sunday between 3pm-5pm.

Just a note for anyone thinking about coming to event. This past spring I attended Top Gun, and was somewhat disappointed, as to why, thats another story. Given my choice of the two events I would pick Fondy over florida. The pilots are about the most friendly group of people you will ever want to meet, they jump at the chance to talk about their aircraft and it feels great to talk one on one. The people who run the event are first rate, friendly and willing to answer any question. The collection of aircraft is about as diverse as can be. So my suggestion is save the airfare and go to Fond du Lac, it's well worth it!

I totally agree. I went up their today w/ my dad and I was IMPRESSED. I can't believe admission to the event is $3 - It is worth the trip ; where I live its a 2 hour drive up there. Its worth every cent. They have great food, great flying, and great, scale planes. I'm not going to say too much right now, I might give away some of the good parts to people who are going to be going later. I highly recommend that if your looking for a good airshow go to Warbirds and Classics over the Midwest.I'll try to get some pictures of the event up in a little bit.

Lookin good Funcat.

This field is absolutely gorgeous. It is big and it is smooth like people have said in above posts. It sits out of town on the south side of Fond Du Lac (very accessible from highway 41) and as you can see in some pictures from last year and this, it sits on the edge of corn fields. There are obviously farm houses and barns around and it is what you could call picture perfect of Wisconsin. We are going to be going this afternoon and I can't wait. I missed out last year and won't make that mistake this year! I cant wait to see that Piper!

TakingFlight96 -> RE: Warbirds and Classics over the Midwest (8/16/2008 4:50:01 PM)

Great pics Funcat ! I nearly crapped my pants when I saw that cub, my dads friend is building a 1/4 scale Corsair and I thought that was big - well I thought wrong ! Yeah, that part w/ the 3 transport planes was pretty cool. I also liked that B-25 Mitchell that dropped like 8 bombs, very beautiful bird. That F-22 Raptor was really awesome too. Overall it was an awesome show ; this year me and my dad went up to Oshkosh for the show and after going to both of the events, Warbirds and Classics has to be my favorite.
