Buzz, Thanks for posting those beauties. Some of them are very well-detailed and would be quite a loss in a mid-air.

Looks like a lot of them are using 4/stroke engines.

Actually, they are all OS .25FX engines, except for one old Enya .40 FS in one of the Albatroses.

It's funny you say that. Bent's D7 was in 3 mid-airs and two crashes on take off, all in the same day!

I just heard the Canadianice's Alb D5 (T-boned into 3 pieces in a spectacular mid-air) is almost repaired. I thought for sure that plane was done.

I had a blast and all I did was fly one practice flight then crash twice on take-off, shredding the spar in the bottom wing (almost fixed).

So, these things take unbelievable punishment.

The Albatross's (Albatri?) are sweet! Are plans available? What is being used for the spinners on the Albatross models?

Spinners are epoxy glass laid up over a lightbulb, then trimmed to nest into the slot of a 2 3/4" Dubro spinner backplate. There's an old pdf plan of the original coroplast and foam D5a that needs to be updated. PM me and I'll email it to you.

Hello, we also had a successful WW1 combat in Australia over the first weekend in April. Great minds think alike as ours are also 25 powered. There were about 35 plus models there for combat with as many as 12 in the air at once. My wife Tracey took some remarkable photos of the action including a fantastic shot as my F DVII had a midd air. The files are quite large though and may not load onto the web site, but I will give it a try. Matt

Since the upload was successful, here are a couple more. One is of most of the models being lined up at the start of day one, on Saturday. The other is of two of my F DVII's, I had three for the weekend, one is reparable! Great FUN. Matt

Nice planes. Are they all built-up wood? Did you scratch or build from plans? I've been looking at all the different types of builds[some coroplast@foam, some balsa].

If you look at the other thread on ww1 there is a bit more info there from last years combat. Most of the models are from the owners own plans and are all built up out of balsa, there were a couple of ARF's for the first time, don't know the details of what ARF they are. This year I used plug in foam wings instead of the built up ones that I have used in the past, took if anything longer to make than the built up version, but they took more punishment, one model had four midd-airs before going in. A bit of a cry of foul when everyone saw the foam at the crash site :-)

Matt,

I like your D7's; very colourful. How did you do the lozenge pattern on the bottom wing?

One of the scale magazines had an article on lozenge which included a pattern with a colour guide. I just photo copied the pattern and cut out the different colours and used spray cans. A bit messy as I did not take too much time and as it was for combat it only had to pass the "first glance test" :-)
