I recently bought the battery pack that Sullivan sells to attach to a starter to make it more portable. It arrived without batteries of course. I bought 12 1700mA sub c batteries, installed them and charged them. The voltmeter reads 16.2 on the charged set. The starter runs but it won't turn over a .40 sized engine. You can lightly hold it with two fingers and keep it from rotating.

I am not a battery guy. It is like alchemy to me. What is wrong here? I am using a Sullivan heavy duty starter (The one shown on Horizon site attached to this battery case.

Hi Jeff,
Exactly what cells did you get? It sounds as though they are possibly cells with high internal resistance.
Also, a fully charged 12 cell pack should be 12.8V fresh off charge, or very close.
With new Nixx cells it's also important not to try to use a peak detecting charger for the first charge, a 24 hr. charge at 170mA (C/10 rate) will form the cells and balance them.
Good luck,
Pete

Thanks Pete. I will have to look at the cells when I get home. I got them from one of the online battery places and they are generic looking cells with slip on cardboard covers and cost $1.97 each. I'm thinking el cheapo here. Maybe I should buy some sanyo or panasonic or something.

My 5-cell packs come off the charger with a voltage of 6.7 or 6.8 volts, which is about 1.35 volts per cell. If you have 12 cells, shouldn't the fully charged voltage be as reported, about 16 volts? Am I missing something?

Eric,
You aren't missing anything. PilotPete is wrong in his statement.
NiCds and NiMhs have a nominal voltage of 1.25 per cell and freshly charged are higher.
My 8 cell xmtr packs read over 11 just after charge and my 4 cell rcvr packs over 5.5.

Jeff,
Cycle the batteries a couple of times at c/10 and then try it.
Make sure all connections are clean.
If that fails try the starter on a car battery and see how it performs.
This will help determine if the starter or pack is causing the problem.
I have a Sullivan starter and pack and it is a good piece of equipment.

Good Luck,

No Pete is getting dyslexic methinks
I meant to type 16.8V, but his measured 16.2 is not too bad equaling 1.35Vpc
