flluke -> Adjusting the receiver on the Falcon 40 (4/30/2008 5:28:27 PM)

Hi all, new to the board. Posted this question on another board but didn't receive an answer so I'm hoping I can get one here.

I have a Falcon 40 and going on my second tail motor replacement. First one burned out and the second one I wrecked the tail into a ledge and the bird wants to spin to the left now. I think the motor is slightly damaged as there was shaft wobble but fixed if by popping that ring back into place. I ordered a new motor and will be replacing it soon. After replacing my first motor I was having the same prob, trying to get it trimmed so it did not spin to the left. After some playing around and adjusting, I finally got it to hover straight again. My trim on my controller is almost all the way to the right though. I was wondering what is the proper way to adjust the pot on the receiver? And what exactly does that do? I assumed it should do basically the same thing the trim on the controller does, changes the rpm of the tail motor? I basically want to try and trim it so I don't have to have the trim on the transmitter all the way to the right.

I tried adjusting the pot on the receiver in this manner. I unplugged the main motor and throttled it up so the tail motor would start spinning. Using a small screw driver I started adjusting the pot on the receiver but the tail motor rpm seemed to remain unchanged. I can also turn the pot in either direction forever it seems. Shouldn't there be some "end point" to the adjustment? Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I was having that problem as well. That prop pot will work but you will have to unplug the 4-1 and power back up to reset the system before the adjustments will take effect.

The pot does spin 360 because there is no stop. There will be a point when you will go from about 0V to I believe 3.3V and then progressivly through that range. Keep at it. The adjustments will work.

Another thing I noticed when trying to dial in my tail after a motor change is that the gyro is pretty touchy. You need to be sure that there is no vibration going on or the tail will wag. I have found that even after getting it dialed in rock solid if I have any vibration going on from loose blades, flybar paddle pitch, etc. that the tail will wag at me. Get rid of the vibration and the tail is solid again.

One more thing. In my efforts to get it working I had checked everything twice and couldn't locate the problem so I just swapped out the main motor thinking that if it were going bad I may not know it yet since minor RPM differences would not be noticed like thery are in the tail. They can be written off as your throttle finger being jumpy. Swapping out the main went a long way to helping me correct my wag issue.

Good luck and welcome to the forum!![:D]

UTM, thanks for the reply, info, and the welcome to the board!

Just for clarification, should I adjust the pot while the battery is plugged in, then unplug and plug in to reset? Or should I adjust it while the battery is unplugged and then plug it in?

I did order 2 tail motors and a new main motor along with some heat sinks, so I think I'll take your advice and replace the main along with the tail. It's the original and even though I power down when crashing, I'm sure there's some damage to the main motor, esp from the first 20 or so flights. My skill has actually improved a bit and can hover it for a bit and can keep it from crashing "hard" into anything. So hopefully these will last me a bit longer. I also read the thread on breaking in new brushed motors and will be doing that on this round of motor swaps.

Again, thank you for the reply and info!

I always unplug the batt and then adjust the pot. You really only need to turn it a few degrees at a time then plug back in and test, unplug adjust test etc... until you get it dialed in. I think that there is not problem with making adjustments while it's powered up but they won't take effect until you reset.

That's a fine way to adjust the tail motor. As UTM says, the pot goes from 0-3.3V and it's a constant turn, so it will just spin and spin in either direction. So use small adjustments. The pot's output runs directly into the A/D on the microcontroller

Not that I recommend you do this all the time, but just turning off your transmitter and then turning it back on again will reset the receiver.

and let me point you to the main thread: Falcon 40
