I ordered some 2s Zippy packs from Hobby City this week. According to the site they have the JST XH balance tabs. I have an MRC 989 to charge, but it will need a standalone balancer. I'm considering the Astro Flight "Blinky" balancer. Will this do the trick? Do I need to buy any adapters or anything? Are there any other balancers that work well that cost less?

Some Blinkey balancers do NOT have reverse polarity protection. If you connect the balance tap on you battery the wrong way your Blinkey may let the smoke out of itself and turn into a paper weight a small one. Buy something else maybe an Equinox.

Thanks, that's good to know, Bob. I did some more searching and found a pretty good review of the Blinky and Equinox balancers. The Equinox is another $5, but it looks like it has some good features. Does anyone know if the supplied harness will work properly with the JST XH balance tab of the Zippy?

I have lots a Equinox cables and adapters so I can do the several kinds of lipos I own. I'd give them a call, they might be familiar with that battery.

Well I just got off the phone with Electrifly. She had no idea what I was talking about. She also said that the connector wasn't even a JST XH connector. I'd heard that the Zippy packs use the same connector as an Align pack, though that left her speechless. It was nice to get a person, but I know no more now than I did before I picked up the phone.

I'm brand new to lipo and I'm discovering the different connectors are a colossal hassle.

Here is what you should get and why.

The TME balancer. First off you don't want to spend much money and the Blinky is the lowest cost one out there. But, it also has the lowest bleed rate (the higher the better) and does not support A123's, so one day you may need to buy another balancer.

The TME unit has a 450 ma bleed rate, one of the higher ones. It also supports A123's out of the box. Price wise, just a few dollars above the Blinky. Your Zippy batteries will simply plug right in. The unit is also reverse polarity protected.

It is also software updatable with the cable kit. $31.95 is the cost of the balancer.

I've read that Align compatible balancers will work. The woman from Electrifly said that Venom packs were as well. I did some research and found that the Hyperion LBA-10 adapter used to balance Align and Venom packs will also work with Zippy... therefore I'm pretty confident that the Equinox will work out of the box. How do you compare that to the TME? I don't have a balancing charger right now, but I may in the future and that would be nice to have. Can you balance and charge at the same time with the TME balancer?

The adapters that come with the LBA 10 are not the same as the ones that are on the Zippy packs. Commen Sence packs have the same plug as the Zippy.

The TME is a much better balancer, IMHO.

Just ordered the TME balancer. It looks like a feature-rich no-nonsense balancer.
