Laethageal -> Charger for dual 7 cell A123 pack? (5/1/2008 3:23:51 PM)

Hi!

I'm sorry to post something that might have been discussed over already, but I can't seem to find the right answer to my question.
I'm new to the hobby but wanted to buy only the mats for 1 projet so I went with, from what I read, was something good at the first time. I pre ordered the Mamba Monster esc which should work up to 25v. I got myself Dewalt pack and am making 2x 7s1p A123 pack from them and was wondering what I should get as charger for it. I know there is many 6s charger on the market, but I couldn't find any for 7s. I don't own an old NiCD charger to user Dapter so I'm pretty much stuck. Any comment ? Should I make 6s pack instead of 7 ? I'm thinking about ordering the neu 1521 1y motor for the new e-maxx 3905. Is 7s too much?

Thanks for your help!

You are correct that there is not a lot of over 6S charger . Three I can think of off hand are Thumder Power 1010C , FMA Cell Pro 10 nas Astro Flight 109 A123 version. AF is least enpensive around $125 and approx. 150 watts, Cell Pro 10 $190 and approx. 160 watts and TP1010 $200 and 220 watts. Only CP10 includes built in balancing.

I own all three , well my 109 was LiPoly only and I modified it to charge both LiPo and A123.
Which one is best depends on your budget and need for fast charging. The Cell Pro 10 is really the best value but the TP 1010C is the fastest most of the time. CP10 is faster if cells are badly out of balance.

Many of us are using the Mastech 5020 power supply to charge the 123s. I fly some packs in parallel and charge them in parallel also. Setting the voltage at the proper level you get both packs finishing in perfect balance with each other. For the price it seems to be good value, as it can put out about 800W, unheard of in a dedicated charger. Lots of threads on the use of this unit on RC Groups. Tex.

The Hyperion EOS 1210i will work also.
There is an alternative to Mastech 5020 power supply: Mean Well SP 500-24. It's rated 500W and the out put voltage is adjustable from 18V to 27V. Good for 5s, 6s and 7s. Not as flexible as Mastech but cheaper.
