It seems that all of the cost advantage of mixing ones own fuel is lost with the high cost of castor and synthetic lube being about $10 or more per quart, then adding in the cost of the methanol, it ends up being just about what I pay locally. Is there any sort of common 2 stroke lube that will mix with methanol and avoid the high-priced racing lubes?

Don't buy it by the quart. You can buy it by the gallon at about $20. I have seen it sold in 30 gallon drums from VP.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_5813036/anchors_5813036/mpage_1/key_/anchor/tm.htm#5813036 for nitro souurce.

S&W Hobbies is a good source for synthetic oil at $24 per gallon

VP is good for castor at 5 gallons for $70.

I get my methanol at the local farm supply (Co-op) or a race shop near by for $3.35 per gallon.

My total cost after tax, shipping and haz mat fee is $10.49 per gallon for 10% nitro fuel with 15% oil (12%syn. 3%castor).

I buy the nitro in the 4 gallon case. I just got a case in last week and it was $163 total which includes shipping and $20 haz mat fee.

Its only 80% nitro. The last time I bought nitro it was $50 per gallon, at 80% it would cost slightly less than you paid for it. However, it may be more expensive now.

They only show 80% nitro on the site. If you call you can get pure nitro. Pure (99.5%) is what I am referring to for $163 per 4 gallon case shipped. They do not normally list the pure on their site because occasionally they have a hard time getting it.

What's the 80% nitro mixed with? Methanol, I'm assuming.
