I have almost finished my arf. Just need to pick a pilot and install the radio gear. The 55ax looks mean. I can't wait to break it in. I hope to borrow my friends camera for some picks and maybe a vid of the maiden. Has anyone flown this combo? What should I expect? OS is calling for a 13x6 prop for break in seems to me that is a little large. Any thoughts? Thanks Everyone..

I flew by SS ARF with a .46-AX and it was a very fast, fun little airplane. The .55 should be even better. I have flown the .55 on my Revolver and currently have one in My WM Rambler .45. It is hard to beat that engine. I also have the .75-AX on my kit built SS-60. It is an awesome combo.

As for the prop, it does sound a little big. I've run the .55 with a 12x7, 12x6 and 11x8 all with good results. I would follow the instructions for break in though.

My girl friend is on vacation. So she has the camera. I have been trying to borrow a friends. As soon as I get a hold of one I will post some pics. The gear came from my LHS. Actually I sent my gf to the LHS for some parts and instructed her to tell the guy what I wanted to do and he sent her home with this gear. I think it said something about kadet on the price tag. Can't wait to hear this thing scream.

Just came in from trying to break the engine in. Damn cheap screws that mount the engine to the engine mount. The head came clean off from one of them. Looks like I will be making a trip to the hardware.

No I haven't fixed it yet. I'm to ticked off at it. I just set it aside. I'm going flying today so there won't be any time for repairs until tomorrow night. Picture are coming I will see my friend at the field today so hopefully I will be able to borrow his camera.

Sorry that I have been away for a while. This girl has ticked me off. She has been a real struggle. One step forward two steps back type of crap. The list of minor repairs that I have had to make during the course of construction is amazing. Anyway she is going to the field with me in a matter of moments. Just thought you guys would want to know. Here are some pics. A couple of the gear conversion, you can't really see anything interesting but here they are. Thanks guys and wish me luck

Maybe they suggest an oversized prop to keep the rpms down during breakin?

Maybe that is what they are doing or maybe its a noise control thing.
I guess there is nothing wrong with a 13x6 on this engine but it seems like a lot of prop to me for a 55 sized engine.
Just out of curosity I would like to know the RPM people can get with this engine and a 13x6.

phornight why are you so frustrated with the build?

The SS40 ARF build is straight-forward.
I see you changed l/gear,why this?
For me the stock gear/wheels worked/work just fine!

Don't be afraid running the 55AX at WOT because this little creature can stand way more!
I fly mine almost 3-1/2 years now with an OS 65LA and 11x6 APC...

Damn how quick she is!
2 days before i maidened my Giant SuperSportster with an OS 160FX and APC 17x10 prop.....you got to see this bitc@ flying!

So stable...so stable

Here are some pics,
Enjoy yours in good life!

I went out yesterday for the maiden flight. I ran a tank of fuel through the AX alternating between really rich and lean. Man the is a sweat sounding machine. Well after that I had to take a break and fly my Easy Sport. That flight went well. I decide it is time for the maiden. I taxied here around for a little bit. The prop has almost zero clearance so there was some ground strikes, had to restart the engine ounce. Got restarted pointed her into the wind eased into the throttle. I have been told because this is a low wing tail dragger to get plenty of wind speed before take off. So I use most of the run way. Well luck would have it at about six feet off the ground the engine shuts off. I didn't have enough wind speed to glide her back in. The wing stalled and she went in nose first. The wing came off like it designed little to no damage there. But the fuse didn't fare so well. The tail section is broken up a little. After a lot of cussing I packed up and went to cry in some beer!! She is back on the bench I hope to have her repaired some time today or tomorrow.

I have an OS55 AX in a Black Horse Super Air, similar sized aircraft but less lift on the wing than the Super Sportster, I would imagine. I've tried 11x8 and 12x6 (both APC) and much prefer the 12x6. You'll be able to pull h u g e loops on that aircraft...
