I don't know how many of you have ever seen battery hacks on youtube.com, most are false. However I recently pulled apart an 18V Dewalt batt and found it was packed with 1.5v Sub C's. You glow plug guys know what that means. Endless Ni-starter batteries! I had been toiling with buying new or finding a replacement batt/charger for my old starter. Sheesh I have 5 on hand nhow free of charge. How'd I get em? I bought 2 new batts for a Dewalt Drill at work. I decided to yank apart the case on the old one. I found about 9 or 10 cells. I pulled them apart and tested them, half were still good and charged at 1.3V. Not bad! Enjoy the free-bees in the future. Brian

i have a pile of old dewalt batteries that are waiting to be recycled. i might need to disassemble one and check it out. david

When you do take them apart you will find the metal strip that jump between cells is easy to pull off, but the solder points need to be ground down with a Dremel. Outside of that I just pulled off the paper cover and poof, instant pile of good batts. The other cells were so far gone that they were leaking and not holding charge so I put them back in the recycle bin(which is probably the reason the pack went dead). If I ever have time I might get some pictures. I don't know the ratings on these except that they will run an 18V Dewalt for hours, so the mah has to be pretty high on each cell.

Just wondering where you bought your replacement batteries? I need to replace packs for a Makita and found the cost of buying two new batteries just slightly less then buying a whole new drill with batteries, charger, case, etc. [8\|]

hey BillyGoat Home Depot with a corporate card and racked up a bill for $120 on a 2 pack. The point to this thread was the endless supply of Sub C's that come from discarded packs. Those cells are between 5 and 10 bucks ea. and we've been pitching them.

Great if you have a good pack and a bad drill, but if the pack is too dead for the drill, it's not gonna power glow very long either. Think about it. You replace the old pack because it is worn out. It's the cells that are worn out, not the housing! When I've had worn out powertool packs, I open them and build new packs with the housing and new cells. Cheaper than new packs for the drill! J

A bad pack may only be bad because it has lost 1 or 2 cells out of the 15. That is why you disassemble the pack and test the cells individually. -I agree, it is cheaper to replace the cells in drill packs than to buy a new brand X one at the hardware store. You will also end up with a better battery this way if you use quality RC cells.

Try www.amazon.com for your replacement battery paks for drills-picked up 2 14.4 V paks, B &D replacement paks for $23 shipped to my door. I have never paid more than $3-4 for a glow battery, 1.5V 2200 mah-if charged properly they last a couple years. I do take my old RX battery paks, tear them down and make remote phone battery paks for the house phones. Like posted, all cells are not totally bad, they last much longer than the $15 phone paks.
