The weather in North Carolina and South Carolina has had a major impact on R/C pylon racing in this area over the past 5-6 months. We had a major drought in 2007. Except for windy days, we could fly and race just about any time. But nature has been making up for the drought. We have had a lot of rainy or drizzly days. Instead of mostly sunny, we have had partly cloudy, mostly cloudy, isolated thunderstorms, scattered thundershowers most of the time, and weekends favorable for R/C flying have been few and far between. This has taken its toll not only on pylon racing, but on fly-in events and other club activities. Good weekends are so scarce that club members don’t feel like trying to put on events.

I was planning to hold monthly races at my field this year, but it’s been about 2 months since I could last mow my field. We finally got a couple of dry days and I got out on the field on 4/30. I had planted rye grass for the winter months. The rye is over a foot tall and has completely blocked the sun from the Bermuda grass. So the runway is not in usable shape and I think it will take 1-2 months before my field can be used for racing. And that’s if it stops raining all the time. There are quite a few large puddles on the field and the ground is soaked.

We have a Club 40 race scheduled for 5/3 at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, but the forecast is not looking good. I haven’t promoted the race because of the weather, plus the FAPA (Flying Aces Pilots Association) needs some introduction to Club 40. Weather permitting, I will have my planes out and maybe we can get some more members introduced to 2 pole club pylon racing.

I changed jobs last year and the new job did not work out well. So I left that job in the middle of March. I started a new job with Wachovia on 4/1. It is a much better job situation and I actually get home before the sun sets. Most of my time in the afternoons and evenings will be spent trying to get my yard and field in shape.

Even though I had the bad job situation and the weather has been a problem, I have used my time to educate myself about car racing. Having access to Humpy Wheeler has inspired me to learn more about what is working very well in that arena in hopes that I can apply it to R/C pylon racing. While many people are familiar with NASCAR, there is a tremendously larger segment of racing that feeds NASCAR. I have attended World of Outlaws Late Model Series and I have read the WoO LMS rulebook at http://www.worldofoutlaws.com … I got pit passes and saw what goes on behind the scenes. I sat in the stands and talked to fans. I’ve also had private tours of the Lowe’s Motor Speedway facility. Last Friday my 13 year old son Matthew got a test drive in a Bandolero car (see http://www.600racing.com). Humpy designed the Legends cars and the Bandolero cars. At the Summer Shootout Series on Tuesday nights at LMS, they average over 200 entries in the Legends and Bando classes. There are a lot of valuable lessons that I am learning and I believe I will be able to apply these lessons to pylon racing.
