Capt Lou -> Flight Pack 100% Balancing ? (5/2/2008 2:00:35 PM)

Hello Guys:

I need your experience/expertise in understanding what is a safe level (percentage of balancing) for A123 battery packs. I bought 3 new 2300 mah A123 flight packs. I charged them with a Cellpro 4S charger. When I charged them for the first time, one charged and balanced at 100%. The other two charged but only balanced at 97-98%. I took one of these and put it on my flight system to discharge and brought it down to about 80%, then, I charged it again and it finally balanced at 100%. The third pack I still have to discharge and re-charge. My question is: Is it ok to rely on these battery packs if they balance out at 97-98% without having achieved a 100% balance? I'm new to this technology and don't know if the 2-3% remaining to balance is critical to the flight pack. I'll use these battery packs in a 50cc plane for the ignition and also to run a JR X9303 radio system with the R921 receiver pushing high torque (220 oz) servos. Thank you in advance for any response.

I have found that it often takes 5-15 cycles for the cells/packs to form and stay in balance well.

The less than 5% you are experiencing means nothing in your application.

My experience is if you charge the pack and there is a slight inbalance and you place a load on it of say 2 amps. or more and check the balance will be much closer.
