Hi.
What is considered to be a safe amount when trickle charging?
200mAh or less?

Hello Gisi,

Panasonic states that trickle charging is not recommended for NiMh batteries. I think they have a very good point, and I believe them.

That would make the safe rate 0 mA.

True that Nimh should not be left on a "trickle" charge (you cannot charge any battery with a trickle charge) to maintain a full charge. This does not mean that they should not be slow charged at C/10 rate for 14-16 hours, in fact they must be charged by this method initially as a forming charge, also they may be charged by this method all the time and will last longer than peak charging.
So to answer the OP's question, charge at one tenth the capacity of the battery for about 16 hours, for example a 2000mAh pack would be charged at 200mA for 16 hours.
A trickle charge is usually considered to be C/50 or one fiftieth of the battery capacity, this works well long term for nicds, but not recommended for nimh.
Now as a practical point on nimh, our cordless phones have nimh packs, they are always on slow charge for almost 5 years, with no loss of capacity that i would notice, go fiqure[:)] [)]

I've had my NIMH receiver and transmitter batteries on "Trickle Charge" (about C/60 rate)literaly for Years.
Never a problem,and never a worry.Always ready to fly,and don't have to remember to charge before flying.

Trickle charge, by definition, it that amount of current that will just equal the losses due to leakage etc. This is not a firm number, it varies with temperature and age of the battery as well as quality of contstuction and can vary from c/500 up to about c/100. Yes, most battery manufacturers say that any charge above that can eventually harm the batteries, at the very least reduce there lifetime. Do not confuse the slow charge (c/10) with trickle charge, they are different things. NiMh are less tolerant of overcharge than NiCads are. In general, any charge of C/10 or less will not seriously harm NiCad's.

In my Triton manual they recommend 7% of the charge rate you charge it at.

I think that for NiCd batteries a trickle charge would be around C/200. For NiMH a trickle charge (not recommended) would be around C/100.

My Triton (ver 1) won't even do a true C/10 charge on my 600mAH 4.8v NiCD packs. A C/10 rate on that pack would be a 0.06AH. The Triton just isn't granular enough. The minimum charging rate is 0.1A. That would be the ideal rate for an 1100mAH NiCD pack however.

Except for larger capacity packs, I don't use my Triton for slow charging.
