I don't think there is another side. It looks pretty straight forward. A mental case bum took offense at the RC'er flying the plane. He came up and sucker punched the guy, then kicked his teeth out when he was down. I'd say the bum got off easy with a broken leg. I just hope charges are dropped against the RC'er.

I hope he asks for a jury trial. If the circumstances are as stated it is doubtful that any jury would find him guilty of anything more than misdomeanor battery or less. The District Attorney is going to know this and will no doubt offer a deal as he knows the case is very weak unless the flier has a record of such in the past.

The law only applies to those who have a job and assets to lose. The homeless (more properly Motivationless) are always released back onto the streets because they have nothing to lose. The simple view is that it costs money to lock them up. The real question is: how much do they cost society when they run loose comitting crimes? I'm not talking about some down on his luck boozehead, I'm talking about the criminal variety.

Dam! Flying RC aircraft is really getting dangerous! One of the first pieces of advice I got when I first started out was to NEVER FLY ALONE. Good advice, though probably not intended for this sort of situation, however had this fellow flying the airplane chose to
to follow that advice the result most like would have been quite different. Isn't Hindsight wonderful? Did anyone we know ever
learned anything from it? Probably not. We're only human.

My new Stun-gun transmitters will soon be on the market and demand should be high in Oregon

Hopefully someone who lives in the area will keep us posted as to the outcome. These incidents make a big splash in the news, but it's almost impossible to find out what the outcome was. This reminds me of a (somewhat different) story a couple of years ago. A Florida family was staying overnight in their RV at a Wal-Mart parking lot in Utah. A drunk started to harass the husband, who eventually got a shot gun and killed the homeless man as his family watched. I've always wondered how the case ended in court, but have been unable to find out. Without knowing the final outcome, it's hard to make pronouncements about now vs the good old days or how messed things up are, etc.

As for the Oregon story, it's a pretty liberal state. If the bum professes to be a pacifist but sorely provoked by the unnatural and offensive noise, smokes dope, and has an environmentalist attitude he'll likely be awarded millions while the guy he assualted will get life times 3 in prison.

MEDFORD POLICE DEPARTMENT

NEWS RELEASE

DATE OF RELEASE: 05-01-08

TYPE OF INCIDENT: Assault with a vehicle

CASE NUMBER: 08-6624

SUSPECT: Hunt, Gregory Dean (date of birth 02-23-60)

Release prepared by: MPO Mike Strouse

On Wednesday, 04-30-08 at about 8:10 PM Medford Police Officers, Fire personnel, and Mercy Ambulance responded to a report of a bicyclist that was struck by a red SUV on Central under the McAndrews overpass. Initial reports by witnesses claimed the driver of the SUV fled the scene.

Investigation revealed that Gregory Dean Hunt had been flying his model airplane in a field north of McAndrews and east of Timber Products when he was approached and assaulted by Jeffrey Michael Hobson. Hobson left on his bicycle southbound along Central Avenue. Hunt entered his red 1996 Chevrolet Tahoe and chased after Hobson. Witnesses saw Hunt swerve across the roadway and strike Hobson with his vehicle pinning him against a chain link fence. Hunt then fled the scene but returned moments later.

Hobson was transported to RVMC for a badly broken lower leg that required surgery. Hunt received care at RVMC for injuries to his face.

Jeffrey Michael Hobson was cited and released for Assault IV and Criminal Mischief I.

Gregory Dean Hunt was lodged at the Jackson County Jail for Assault II and Criminal Mischief I.

Mr. Hunt’s white, turquoise, and purple “Hangar 9” airplane has not been recovered. For questions regarding this case or if the model airplane is located please contact Detective Jim Williams, Medford Police.

Lt Tim Doney

I know what you mean Pat Roy. I have friends in Oregon that are so liberal it makes your stomach hurt. They would be 100% in sympathy with the bum.

Just like football. Guy gets mad and takes a swing at somebody, he almost always gets a freebie. Poor guy that got smacked retaliates and draws a flag every time. Ain't right. Exactly what happened here.
