G'day all

I've been flying model aircraft for many many years and had really had a great time doing it. But ... over the years, there are just a few moments that really stand out as special. Really memorable days when I went home with a grin from ear to ear.

Some of my highlights include -

1. The first flight of my recently scratch built Cirrus Moth powered by an elderly OS FS40. It just flew so well and did repeated touch and goes on its first flight looking and sounding wonderful in the air.
2. A day back about 1976 when I flew my Nobler Junior all afternoon and started to understand what a really good design the Nobler was.
3. The day my brother fueled his combat models with straight nitro. You had to be there.
4. The day way back about 1977 when I whipped a team racer for 100 laps after the engine had stopped. Had to stop. It got dark.
5. A nice fine calm day recently when I just puttered my Kadet Senior with its Saito 72 around all day. Relaxing and great fun doing endless touch and goes and attempting to get it to roll. (It is a non aileron version.)

So there are some of mine.

Anyone else care to nominate a few really memorable days flying?

First flight with my SR. falcon Royal .46, futaba 6ch, 148 servos.
My first flat spin with a Global Tecate Bipe so flat and fast good thing I had a reliable engine.
My first inverted fast and low fly by. Direct Connection Tsunami, magnum .46, coming down about 30 degrees full throttle over the runway leveled out bout 5 feet off the deck, rolled inverted, held a nice straight line, pulled {pushed] up to a 45 degree climb slammed the sticks into the corners and did about 6 snaps. man my cheeks were pinched tight .

Flying my Gremlin into a tree and having to stand on the roll bar of my Jeep to get to the lowest branches of that tree before I could climb up and throw the Gremlin down.

mike109: Mentioning your Junior Nobler reminded me of a Summer day, back in 1961.

As the recently crowned Air Youth State Champion, I was flying a demonstration in front of a large crowd. Feeling bold, I decided to see just how low I could fly inverted. The little Nobler was performing flawlessly, but the pilot wasn't. That little Fox .15 never ran correctly again.

The Junior Nobler was a great design. It was the nicest flying CL model I ever owned.

G'day My little Nobler was one of the great planes I have owned. It was powered by a Super Tigre G20 15 glow which I had converted from a diesel. The little ST was a really sweet running engine - totally reliable and predictable and just the ticket for the little Nobler.

The first time my buddy and I took my 25 size S-ray 3 channel trainer (heavily kit bashed) to the field to conduct engine and "taxi" tests. He had a bout 10 minutes of flying experience, and I had never flown anything. We taxi'd about for 3 or 4 minutes, when my buddy remarked "you seem to have the hang of that, put'er up and I'll land it for you!".

I'm a suggestible type, as it turns out, and I found the plane facing into the wind, with my thumb advancing the throttle. As soon as it left the ground, I knew we'd screwed up. "Just try to keep it straight and level until you get up there" admonished my friend. "I'm tryin'" I said. Was like trying to drive a car with the steering column broken clean thru... Somehow it achieved a hundred feet or so, and I tossed the radio at my friend. IN the time it took to do so, the plane went from "level" to doing a tail slide at full throttle. Barry struggled as I had, getting disorientated once, and pulling out of the dive about 6" below the top of the grass, and finally wrestled it around to a decent, if un gracefull landing. Engine out, but nothing worse.

CG was .75" behind the 30% mark. Oops, shoulda checked that!

Another was the first flight of my Herr Aquastar (Norvel .061) off water. 4" waves proved too much for the hull for an into-the-wind take-off (waves kept breaking over the bow and impacting the 21,000rpm prop), so I turned broadside to the waves. She hopped onto plane, and was off the water in 30'. What a beautiful sight!

Or the first 90mph low pass with my Dynaflyte fun scale 40 kit bashed mustang.... What a rush... 3 victory snaps on pullout, wow, that pilot's brains must be coming out his nose!

J
