428 racing kicks off May 10 (a week from today) at the Grassfield in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

Hopefully the field will be dry, the snow will be melted, and the winds will be calm.

I picked up these nice Oak laser cut plaques for the 1st place pilot and caller (I still say this is a team sport).

The plaques are very reasonable, these two plaques delivered were $30. They have a lot of nice choices on type of wood if you prefer something different.

I'll let Randy guess what kind of plane is featured in center of the plaque

I totally disagree !!!! This year will be my 38th year of racing. I don't recall ever attending a race where a trophy was given to a helper/plane holder. Take a look at the AMA list of record holders. Any helper names listed??? There is ONE person flying the plane. You could anger the racing gods with this move Dave I wouldn't be surprised if they cause it to rain or otherwise be nasty next sat. You understand that you have now doubled the cost of trophys. You will now have to take two pictures to get all the "Winners" pictures. Then again a relative newcommer like yourself might start a "New idea" that could catch on. I just asked my wife if she thought racing was a team sport She just laughed.

Actually, the idea came from the Markham Park race a couple weeks ago where they awarded a trophy / plaque of some sort to the caller of the pilot with fast time. (Scott Causey / AJ Seaholm).

I thought it was a great idea and followed their lead.

How hard is it going to be to burn R-200 on the wing of those plaques after we win the race?

The only thing you'll be burning up is your motor

In F3D, the pilot and caller are considered a "team". I have a silver medal and trophy from the 1999 Worlds when I called for Shadel, as well as gold medal and trophy because the US team took 1st that year.

Locally, I really don't see the point in awarding trophies to the callers however, as it is an additional expense for the clubs.

If you're doing a series, you could even look into doing them like the Western Pylon Series. Each race just gives out the small plate with the class, race date, and placing. After you get your first plate for the year, they give you the wood plaque to put the plate on. You then put all your plates on that same plaque until you fill it up, or the season is over. You don't get another plaque until you have more plates than the plaque will hold. A couple years ago I filled up two 8x10 plaques. I'd rather have just the two plagues instead of the 16 or so that I would've had if we had individual plagues for all the races.

Thats a very good idea about the plaque with plates, cuts down on expense, and finding a place to put all the trophies.

As to this race, I CD one a year and furnish my own awards, so its at no expense to the club. Unfortunately, I think 4 out the past 6 races I've CD'd have been cancelled due to rain, and 1 year because the Sod Farm was flooded.

I think the idea for a plate on 428 and 422 is fine, but 424, I feel differently. Well, at least from my perspective and from other observation seeing how the newbies were thinking.

The 424 racers are the new guys mostly, and I think it's better to give them the opportunity to earn a trophy or two for each race so they can can feel better for their hard work and efforts. This also give them an incentive to try harder next time for a trophy placing rather than just a plate with little to show for. That way, it keeps them coming back for more or something to look forward to on the next race. Just a thought!

Plaques are nice. They are easy to stack, and you only have to dust the one on top.

I guess you're assuming one doesn't do well enough to need multiple stacks?
