ORIGINAL: Broken Wings

I've collected a few engines that I think will be suitable. OS MAX H-80, OS FS-90 and a New K&B 1.0 AERO with the square muffler/mount. Which one would you use?

Wingspan: Topwing—76 in.
Bottom—71 in.

Eddie's site says .90/1.20 2 Stroke but the construction article says it will fly with a .60 or ST .72

I have one with the OS FS90 and it flys it fine. When this plane was designed the largest engine we could use at that time was a .60 two stroke. The first four stroke was OS FS60 in 1976.

Hey BW,

Blabbing about your Big John project means a build thread and pictures. Keep us posted on your progress.

The Big John should fly fine with either of those engines

You mention your top wing was 76" and bottom wing was 71". I just measured mine and they are both 76". Also mine has a lot of light ply in it. I believe it was a MEN kit and not plans built. (You can tell I did not build it. ) I checked the article of Big John OMT in RCM issue of 3-67 and it indicates they are both the same span.

Could someone knowledgable of the BJ inlighten me as to its history?

If anyone is interested, I just posted a zip file in the files section of the VRCS YAHOO site http://www.groups.yahoo.com/group/vrcs of the Big John OMT article from RCM March 1967.

I just looked at the OMT plans and while all four wing pannels are built the same, the center sections of the wings are different.

BJ the 1st is an equal span bipe while OMT has the 76" upper wing and the 71" lower wing. BTW, the Graham Lomax built OMT is still around, now with an opposed twin, radial cowl and bomb bay for candy drop. Graham was one of the first members of the AMA Show Team and used the airplane in the show routine.

Hi guys!

I just ordered a set of BJ plans from RCM plans service. It is a nice looking plane and it may move forward to my next project
eventhough I have other things to do (or I should do) first. I have to finish up my GP Ultimate before I get anything else going however.

Did you get Big John "The First" or Big John OMT "One More Time"...?

Fed-Ex just dropped off my "semi-kit" from Lazer-works. I haven't unwrapped it yet but I peeked through the plastic wrap and it sure looks good. This will be my first laser cut build.

I'm thinking about using an older OS Max H-80 as it came out around the same time. It has a rear rotor/rear carburetor with an elbow that will allow you to flip it 180 degrees and mount the engine inverted. They swing real large props.

I scored a set of the 4-1/2" inch Veco wheels on *bay that are called out on the plans as well. Anybody know what kind of air filler valve VECO used? Is it like the Trexler pump?

I believe it is the original BJ plan. It is the one from RCM magazine plans service number 206. I will cut the kit out myself to save a few bucks and I don't mind doing that anyway to be able to select my own wood. Not sure what I will power it with yet but it will probably be a 4 stroke something. I may just have to move this project up in front of some others I have waiting.

I just took some measurments and it looks like the Robart 1/5 scale Cub gear will fit perfect. I want to build up the struts using Proctor fittings or similar and emailed Robart to see if they would make a gear set out of brass or partially brass.

I want to make it "Funny Scale" to coin the term...patches on the wings, etc.

Well the plans for my BJ showed up last week and I placed a wood order yesterday. Hopefully I can minimize some of the blocking like in the wing tips to save some weight. Having a hard time locating some spruce sticks as I don't have a local hobby store close by but I am sure I will find some. Has anyone put ailerons on both wings ? What other things have people done to modify or personalize their Big John?

Mine only has the ailerons on the lower wing. If I were to build one, I would put ailerons on both wings as the roll rate is sloooooooow.

Hi Dan Thompson - we have so many similar tastes. I too had a Big John, and enjoyed it immensely. It flew with an Enya 60 - before 4-cycle engines became available, and that is what it should have, an 80 or 90.

I flew Quarter Midgets with a friend who moved to CA from Seattle. Someone up there build a BJ, and someone else borrowed it to study it and pulled a mold from the fuselage - sounds like a dangerous thing to do. Anyway, my friend later acquired the mold and made a couple of fiberglass fuselages, one of which I used for mine. Sure saved a lot of work. He may still have the mold and though really busy, might be talked into coming up with a fuse or two. Try him: bobroot@charter.net . Luck, Eloy

Hi Eloy,

Good to hear from you again. I don't plan on another BJ in the near future, but it is good to know about the FG fuse.
I have the old original OS 90 four stroke on mine. It handles it fine, but as the saying goes, it flys on the wing.

I have one model to cover and I'm going to start building Big John OTM. I must have read the construction article twenty times.

I even found a March 1967 issue of R/C Modeler Magazine (suitable for framing) HeHeHe...

It's a cool old plane.

A second set of ailerons would help, shorten the length but make them equal size on both wings. Even with four ailerons, you'll still have to fly it through the roll. Get the Cg just a touch aft, it does the neatest snap roll you ever saw.

Thanks guys ... The dual aileron set-up sounds good. I like to have as much aileron authority as I can get even if I don't need it.
Not necessarily sensitive but responsive.. I have a Lazy Ace 62 that has bottom ailerons only and it does ok with lots of throw
but could use a tad more. I don't mind flying it through the roll at all as it keeps the thumbs limber. Can't wait to get building..

I have been resurrecting an old Big John for the past couple of weeks. Had no idea what
I was working on just know I liked it. It is now ready to fly except for balancing.
Had to post a thread here to find out what the model was and soon got an answer. So,
would one of you Big John fans be kind enough to tell me where to set the CG.
Here are a couple of photos of what I started with. I have added an early model OS 120 4 stroke
and Futabe gear. All up weight is 12 lbs. 4 oz. I'll post some recent photos later today.
Tom

You might hear from someone who has the plans.  I don't.

I would determine where 33.3% is for each wing.  Then set the CG exactly in the middle.

iglowhead, start with the Cg somewhere around the center span of the upper wing.  Shift it forward or aft to see where it performs best.  For decent aerobatics and snap rolls, I have mine shifted slightly aft.

Here's what I was suggesting for a biplane with two straight, constant chord wings of equal area:
