There has been many a post about modifying pc power supplies........I'd like to share my thoughts and experiences after building a unit from scratch.

There seems to be some myth regarding the loading of the 5v rail in order to achieve the full 12v potential....The 12v rail is monitored in so far that it wil shut down the psu if it goes high.....it nominally will sit around 11.8-12v and tracks the 5v rail.
The 5v rail is monitored and this forms the feed back loop for sensing load variations.Placing a high power resistor on the 5v rails just gives it a fixed load, this may or may not be sufficient for the unit to function correctly when loaded with a charger like the Triton or uper Nova.

What really is required is to make the full power of the transformer available at the 12v side. The mods to enable this are quite involved, but basically all that happens is all diodes are removed and the 12v one's are replced with diodes of a higher piv rating other wise the unit goes bang!!! The voltage sensing for regulation is then moved from the 5v rail over to the 12v rail.

This may all sound a bit daunting for electric fliers, but anyone with experience of electronics should be able to perform the mods...
I've attached the schematic for the unit I built, I'd be happy to assist anyone in modifying or building
