You need to post this in the 1/2A forums. This forum group is for gas engines, not small glow fuel engines.[)]

John,

Tell us more about the model. What size (wingspan) is it, what engine size is recommended, do you intend to fly it FF, UC, RC, etc.

Since the F4U Corsair has a large cowling, you may want to use a diesel. Diesels can handle larger props. Perhaps a COX Texaco engine would be good, since it also can handle large props.

The more information you can supply, the more accurate information we can provide.

Folks here are glad to help with as much information as you need...just ask.

George

Update: John, I looked up the plane on the internet. Is this the 30.75 inch wingspan model?

Have you built models before?

Hi John, welcome...DONT DO IT!!!...you need some building and flying experience before you ever open a guillows kit,,go up to the top of this forum and look at the sticky for the 1/2a LST trianer....there are other kits for smaller model trainers but not a lot of them..this is just the type of experience that will make you quit the hobby.....Rog

John,

You are tackleing many obstacles at once...learning to build, learning to cover, learning to operate a model engine, and learning to fly. The airplane you have is a very hard project for a first effort. Things must be aligned perfectly.

If at all possible, get some local modelers to help. Some people go to all the expense and effort needed to build a complicated model like that only to crash and destroy it on the first flight...then give up. You have an interest, so take it slow (with help) and make it worthwhile.

That kind of plane is harder to fly than a high wing trainer. It would be nice to get a high wing trainer that is easy to fly and easy to repair. Sometimes you can find such a plane at a local RC club.

I do not have a Wasp .061 but I hear good things about them. There again, it is much easier to learn with help.

If you can't find help, we can talk you through much of it. Look through the AMA (Academy of Model Aeronautics) and see if there is a local club in your area where you might get help. Most live modelers are just as willing to help as online modelers.

AMA = http://www.modelaircraft.org/

George

John,
If you absolutely want a Corsair to fly R/C, consider 2 other options:
The GWS foam plane, covered with low temp film,
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXHCP3&P=7
or better yet, an ACE Simple Series Corsair:
http://www.acehobby.com/ace/ACE4242.htm
I have been building and flying R/C for 35 years, and converting (and flying!) the Guillows
Corsair kit would be a challenge, & I have almost 90 R/C planes under my belt.
Dave
Other options,
Herr Cloud Ranger
Sig Rascal
Sig Hummer
ACE Whizard or better yet, the Grasshopper

Hmmm... It must be pretty crowded under there!

John

In all seriousness, Dave, George and Rog have given you sound advice. Guillows are tough first builds and, unfortunately, one of the more difficult brands to learn to fly. Of the planes listed, I think the HERR Cloud Ranger is one of the best choices with the ACE Simple Series following. HERR produces excellent kits and all are quite flyable.

Probably when many of us got into the hobby, we envisioned ourselves flying something that was slick, quick and flashy - I certainly did. My first choice was a T-tailed Rivets. Thanks to some persuasion and good advice from a seasoned flyer, what I ended up with was a scratch built beater that was ugly as sin, tough a nails and just what I needed.
