Great racing today! The first race at Lowe's was a huge success. I had a great time, good Club-40 and Q-25 racing. All in all the race carnage was not too bad. Evan & I chewed each others wing tips up just a little, nothing that can't be fixed fairly easily. Poor Dave backed over his plane before the race started . . . but Don Stegall came through and let Dave fly one of his planes.

I'm really looking forward to the next. Thanks to everyone who worked hard to have a race, it is much appreciated. - Seth

Seth,

Thanks to you, all of the race participants, the race workers, and the spectators for a really fun (but hot) day.

Thanks for helping Matthew as his helper/caller. Getting beat by your own son is actually pretty cool. I think he would have made it into the finals if the SuperTigre GS-40 on the plane he was flying had not gotten stuck on full throttle. Changing planes threw him off a little. But Evan was flying good so their match-up might have ended the same anyway.

I believe it was a good experience for the FAPA guys, and I believe we will have much better attendance and participation at the next race in July.

We have changed the races from a 2 day format to Saturday being the race date, and Sunday being the rain date. I'm updating the flier and web site and I hope to get pre-registration online this week.

I sold a bunch of Sky Raider Mach II ARF kits and all of the Thunder Tiger Pro 40 engines I had. I could have sold more.

Thanks for making the drive to Charlotte and I really look forward to getting beat by you again in July.

Don,
Can you please give us a race report, winners, entries, classes flown, pictures and the impression of the club after the race?

Bill

Don - I think you are smart to switch to a one day format with Sunday as the rain day. I am planning to race July 12 . . . I think Vic and several others will be there as well. I know Jackie wants to come back to Concord Mills and shop some more (ha, ha). The Charlotte club (Flying Aces Pilots' Association - http://flyingacesrc.com) who hosted the race were really nice guys. Looking forward to another great day of racing . . . I just hve to work on my wing tip where Evan got a little physical . . . see you soon - Seth

Bill,

Unfortunately I was too busy to get photos or video. So was Matthew. He flew in Club 40 which we flew first, and then he sold burgers for lunch and took over other duties. I was a cut judge for all of Quickie 25 and I flew and called in Club 40.

Fortunately Jay Marsh brought a guy named Chris who did the score keeping. Jim Galuska from FAPA (Flying Aces Pilots’ Association, the host club) was the starter. This was his first time and he did great. I don’t believe he had never even seen a real R/C pylon race.

“Huge Success” is a relative term. There was only one mid-air and no crashes. We had cut judges in place almost all of the time. They had to take a break during Club 40, but it was only a few minutes. Everyone had fun. Several FAPA guys bought Club 40 planes after the racing and Tom Boyd is going to probably work with me on The Screamer Q-500 that I haven’t had a chance to work on lately.

In terms of the club impression, do you mean the people from the club or the impression of the people who visited the site? All of the FAPA people liked the racing and are ready for more. Since the Huntersville field has opened back up, we did not take time away from the sport fliers. Not that many non-pilots showed up. Some of the competitors brought family members and friends. We had a few people from the Charlotte area show up as spectators.

There were some major challenges to even pulling this event off. My wreck on 5/9 put me out of commission for several weeks. The Coca-Cola 600 shut down the site for the last half of May and then until the Tuesday before the race. Humpy Wheeler’s retirement had us not knowing for sure if we would even be able to fly at Lowe’s Motor Speedway until Tuesday 6/10. Fortunately the site was opened back up just a day or two before the race. It will be open for the rest of the summer until the fall race, and then it should open back up at least through 2009.

In terms of events flown, we flew Club 40 and Quickie 25. Only two people showed up with 424 planes (on Saturday), so we did not fly 424. We had 6 pilots in Club 40 and 4 pilots in Quickie 25 on Saturday. We did not race on Sunday.

In terms of bringing back the culture of R/C Pylon Racing, for those in attendance, I have to believe it was a success. I believe we will grow. This was kind of like the first Texas Club 40 race where they had 6-7 pilots a few years ago. Look where they are now. I can see the same thing happening here if myself and others are able to work with the local clubs and build a circuit.

I will get the scoring sheets and post the participants and winners. Someone was taking a lot of pictures. If I can find out who it was and get them, I will post them or a link to them.

The July 12 race is shaping up to have good attendance. If I send some fliers to you will you distribute them in your area?

You may have to share Seth as your caller. Matthew likes the way he calls.

We need to get fliers out as soon as possible. I have updated the flier and it is on the www.LowesRC.com web site. I will print some in color and a lot in black and white, and get them to hobby shops and clubs in the area. If you or anyone else can help distribute them, please send me a private message or email. We really need to blanket the area.

I also have to get the Quickie 25 rules (and a ARF/kit/plans list) on RCPRO. We definitely picked up interest in that class, as well as Club 40, this past weekend.

The July 12 and August 16 races at Lowe's Motor Speedway are shaping up to be good events. The site at LMS is being mowed every week and is in fine shape.

I expect to have at least 10 entries in Club 40 for the 7-12 race. I expect 6 or more in Quickie 25.

Jimmy Katz and John Gibson are planning to race 424 planes and are ready to rock.

If you are anywhere near Charlotte / Concord, please come on out to race or watch. If you have never attended a race, you will find it fun to watch. And it's even fun to work as a judge or lap counter/timer. The action will be good with some close racing.

The race will be run using AMA scoring and procedures. See http://www.LowesRC.com for the race flier.

OK guys. I am coming to the race at Charlotte on July 12.

Never raced 2 pole before. Is there anyone from Texas that could send me some speed secrets about club 40 racing. We will be on the 400 foot course and I will be using the TT 40 engine. What is a good prop? If you have an answer, email me at:
warpdrive03@aim.com

After I read that Jim and John were coming, I couldn't resist. I hear those guys are extremely good competition and fast also.

This will be a good learning experience for me.

James,

I just confirmed with Jim Katz that he is going to make the 7-12 race. He will be flying in 424 and Quickie 25. Possibly Club 40 if he can get his plane ready. John Gibson will be in 424 and Quickie 25 as well. They are both excellent pilots.

If the weather cooperates, this will take club racing in this area to a new level. I have been getting fliers out to local hobby shops and clubs.

We will be running Club 40 to the RCPRO rules. See http://www.rcpro.org/html/rules/club_40/rules.htm. The prop rule is being changed to allow any unmodified commercially available prop. Previously any prop was allowed. I will get the new clarification online ASAP.

Quickie 25 requires an
