Thought it was time to peel off the oil soaked covering and check the plane over for any potential failures. This is an original 1st year generation 1 with well over 500 flights. Other than a weak landing gear platform on the generation 1 this plane is in excellent shape after all of the flights. I was looking for areas to lighten it but it has about every ounce of uneeded balsa and plywood already removed. I did remove a little wood in the rudder and vertical stab. Previously I had about 8 ounces in the cowl to balance and my goal was to remove enough tail weight to not need any weight in the nose. I also removed the foam in the sides of the fuselage and it is built up balsa like the 3rd generation. I balanced it this morning outside and achieved my goal. This is covered in monokote and I did purchase a new canopy and cowl for it. DA 100 with standard mufflers. I cut out the monokote pattern on my vinyl cutter. I designed it on the flat so when I went to put the pieces of monokote on the curved frame there was still a little trimming to do but it did save a lot of time. Should be good for another 500 plus flights. Now I just have to talk Quique into letting me endurance test the 120"... Jim

Jim,

This is awesome! I am really impressed! I could never tell this was not a GenIII. You have done an outstanding job covering this.
Question: What vinyl cutter are you using? I have a Stika 12 and would love to cut covering but seems very difficult and time consuming. Any suggestions?

Thanks for sharing. I am sure you will get well over 500 flights on this.

Reza

Reza,

I use an Ioline 301 for cutting monokote. The difference is that this cutter has a cutting tray with a double sided tape applied to it. I roll out the monokote smooth onto the tray and the knife is cutting on a flat surface. The only draw back is that the cutting size is 20 x 30 inches. I also do small vinyl cutting with this cutter and seems to make smaller, intricate cuts. If I have a compound curve on a plane I've cut out a graphic with monokote instead of sign vinyl to form around the curve better. All the checkerboard squares in blue and yellow on the cap are monokote. The bottom of the plane is totally 3 inch square black and white squares and all pieces were cut out on my Ioline. The Ioline cutter is best at cutting out poly-twill material for embroidery (see picture) and cutting out thermo-film to put down on t-shirts. I then design an embroidery program to tack down the twill and then embroider any detail on top. Obviously the only reason I own this machine is because one of the services I provide is embroidery. It's just a perk to use it for my hobby as well. I also have two engraving machines for trophy and plaques that we make and I have found that by installing small cutting drills I can cut out my own bulkheads and parts out of balsa, plywood and light metal or plastic. Jim,

Thanks for the explanation. I thought you might have something advanced. I cn't do anything like this with mine. Mine is a small cutter for the hobby only and I hardly actually use it. It's slow and time consuming but does the cutting job when I need it.

Thanks again,
Reza
