Hello, I'm sure someone here has flown on a commercial airline with their transmitter as a carry on. I have a tranmitter case to carry it in. Has anyone ever had any trouble getting it through security?

That's funny, I have been wanting to do this when I go to rlando in June, to practice flying in the hotel with Rf on the Laptop.
I'd like to know too. I plan on checking it though.

Just a guess, but if you take the battery out so the security people would know it's non-functional, they might treat it like a laptop. Send it thru X-ray and let you keep it with you.

You could sit in your seat and freak out the passengers, playing with the sticks, tell them you're flying the plane

I frequently carry the tx for my simulator in my carry on back pack without a problem. Takning the battery out of a computer Tx for a long period is not a good idea unless you like sending them back to the factory after the internal lithium goes dead. However, if you don't have a computer radio removing the battery might not be a problem. Then all you need to do is explain the battery...

I got curious, so I e-mailed TSA and asked them. Not surprisingly, I got this non-commital response:

My question: "I fly radio control airplanes and wondered if it is allowable to take an R/C transmitter, in a case, as a carry-on item? These are typically expensive and delicate items that it would be preferred not to send in checked baggage. Are there any restrictions, and if so, what are they?"

TSA response: "The TSA's current security screening procedures require all carry-on luggage and accessible property be screened before passengers take them on board an aircraft. Regardless of whether an item is on the permitted or prohibited list, the Transportation Security Officers have the discretion to prohibit the individual from carrying an item through the screening checkpoint or on board an aircraft if the item poses a security threat.

"Therefore, TSA security screening personnel make the final decision on whether to permit items like this into the sterile area of the airport."

Which all is to simply say, they might or might not let you take it, depending on who the screener is and how bad they were pi**ed off by the person in front of you.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm actually flying on Sunday so I'll ask the TSA at the airport. Unfortunately, I believe that I'll run into the real life scenario of khodges email response. Even if they say this week that it is allowable, when I actually try to take it in a couple of weeks they might say no. The reason I don't want to check it is that I am just going on a 2 day trip and I am not checking any bags. Anyway, I'll let you guys know what the say next week.

I have carried my tranmitter case on several times over the last few years. Two transmitters, a glow driver, my trident and Cirrius charges, and many banana plug charging clips.

Every time I got pulled to the side while someone wiped it with those bomb wipes, and asked questions about what everything was. I never took the batteries out, and never had a problem carrying my things on. Just get there a little early, answer their questions, and act normal and its never been a problem for me.

don't know, but they have never not let me on a plane. I have traveled at least 5 times round trip with my transmitter case in tow.

Regardless of what you do, note that airline baggage claims will not provide any coverage for a transmitter, camera/photographic equipment, electronics, or computer items. Matter of fact, if you read the fine print most everything that goes into the baggage compartment or taken as carry on is excluded from loss or damage coverage.

Unless it is a Futaba. Futaba has non-volatile memory. Means you can take your battery out and leave it out forever if you want to and it will not lose the stored information.
