Mr67Stang -> New guy crashes due to structural failure/overstress (5/5/2008 5:11:42 AM)

I was at the feild today working out my 50 size extra 260. By far the nicest day of the year for flying with almost no wind. It is so much easier to fly presice manouvers on a calm day... Well an older (retired) gentleman shows up at the feild with some foam 4 channel electic Cessna. He asks if I would hand launch for him so he could have both hands on the controller. I happly help him out. I quickly learn his eperience level is limited as I wach him fight to keep the plane flying. I calmly advise hime to just make gentle circles and get some altitude so he would have some room for error. The plane gets away from him and he can't bring it back. So he quickly hands me the controller and says bring it back[X(] I find the underpowered Cessna a challenge to orientate at the distance he had it out but some how manged to avoid crashing his plane and return it to the landing strip for him. I then find he charged his NmHi batteries last week. I advised him to ensure he has a fresh charge on them before flying them (at least within 24 hours). He then gets a battery out and has me fly the plane. This battery had more power so I take the plane to about 100 ft and hand him the controller. After about 3 minutes of porposing due to over controlling the plane the wing sepperates from the fuse and lawn darts to the ground. Upon inspection the wing bolts were firmly mounted to the fuse with chunks of the wings foam still being retained from where the rest of the wing ripped it's self free.

I really do not like these foam planes that are being marketed for "beginners". Many will never get past the initial disapointment and just give up before seeing how much better flying is with a nicer model that of course will cost more.

Great story. I was thinking about getting one of those cessna foamies for my g/f to learn on. Maybe not.

Sad story, I feel sorry for him.

Yeah, I've seen one of those fold up during a 'high power' dive. He pulled on the elevator and the wings folded up and back then tore off. The thing did not rotate, it just kept going straight down and into the dirt. Not much left of anything on that plane after that. I was actually surprized that a foam plane like that could go that fast.. [:)]

Had a similar experience w/ a PZ decathlon but instead of the wing folding up the battery fell out about 50' feet up. Took me awhile to realize what happened. Luckily the plane gently glided into some pines the the battery was difficult to find.

I just bought a used Hobbico Avistar with a transmitter and receiver for $60. (all from a good freind and in excellent condition) I also have an OS .40 LA thanks to CGR and 5 servos laying around. I will put it all together and buddy box this aspiring pilot this weekend weather permitting.

A strip of fiber glass packing tape on the bottom of the wing might help with this. The small ace airplanes do this as the wings have no spar.

You are right. Some of these planes marketed for beginners are FAR from easy to fly. There is a fella in one of my clubs that has a similar type of plane and he's asked to take it off and land it for him a few times...and I'll be damned if it wasn't one of the most difficult planes i have ever flown. Response of the control surfaces is VERY delayed and VERY sloppy. I am by no means an expert, but i have flown a bunch of different airplanes in my short 4 yr R/C career, and this thing by far was the worst!

It's quite sad to see somebody get discouraged over a plane that they have no business flying. But the label says "perfect for beginners," and that's what the hobby shop recommended...[8|]

There is really no difference with these than the old COX airplanes. Sure they could maybe fly, but as a kid growing up at 5,000' altitude they would not. There was never anything telling you about that.
As long as people continue to by these, they will continue to be manufactured. These types of planes may discourage some but if the true interest is there, I think most will choose a more practical plane down the road.

im so glad that i didnt go that way when i bought my first plane about 5 years ago. i didnt get a great trainer but i got an ok one and had no issues even when i put it through more high stress manuvers.

Cub Killer -> RE: New guy crashes due to structural failure/overstress (5/9/2008 1:19:27 AM)

I had that plane.It was a fly zone.Same thing happened,What a piece of crap.I did a loop and at the bottom ,the wings folded.I suggest anyone wanting to get into one of these types of planes get the hobby zone Super cub.I taught myself to fly with one of these.It will only break if you hit something,like the ground.Used to fix mine with packing tape.Still have it.Take it out if someone I know wants too try flying.Better then letting them try my Pitts.
