I recommend not putting one on yet. Learn about the helo with out the use of flight aids and then decide if you want them.

I'm sorry but I have to disagree! That's like telling someone to learn how to drive a car without power steering! Why wouldn't you get a decent gyro? You will end up with one anyway. I know of no one that flies a nitro heli without a gyro! Yes I know.....people used to fly them without even a rate gyro....but people also used to drive cars without power steering and brakes!

A decent low-cost one for that size heli would be the GY-401. I use one on my Raptor 50 as well as my TREX. Yes, there are indeed better ones, but it hold the tail fine and costs $130.

Good luck!

I bet you want a governor too? Heck we don't need collective even...

Seriously, I screwed up and had just read a governor thread when this poped up and I still had governor on the mind. Yes you want a gyro.

It is interesting in this day of electronics to program a switch to turn it off, or the gain to zero, and see what it does. On a well set up helo it's amaizing that yo ucan fairly well control it with out the gyro....

I have to say that a gyro will make learning a lot easier. Don't need one to fly but why would you not? Like stated, when they weren't available you made due, now that they are available why would you not take advantage of the technology?

ok ok now i have to add my 2 cents here... sorry but yes GET A GYRO! dont get into trying not to fly without it, as i have stated in newmerous forums that i was goin to try it without , i basically got my ass chewed out for it. i am an impatient bugger i'll admit this, but i have seen the light on this subject and everyone is right on both sides but beginning into nitro heli's with todays technology we are blessed so yes again i say get the gyro. me i am just selling my van in order to pay off bills and hopefully get a gy 401. before i crash it and be done with it... GYRO. oh and yes get the gy401 its futaba

the first heli i ever had didn't have a gyro heck back then they cost so much i couldn't afford one and they where really big too and yes i did fly it with out a gyro it wasn't pretty but it flew i found that by standing on one leg while riding a unicycle and sticking out my tong , shutting one eye and flipping backwards and eating a ice cream cone all at the same time that thing would hover and do ff... would i do it again .... Heck NO that is just to dang much work spend the money get a good quality GYRO like JR or Futaba and don't wast it on those so called like so and so's as THEY ARNT WORTH THE MONEY .

i like JR

That's my 2 cents

You definitely want to get a gyro, trying to fly without one is like flushing money down the drain, basically multiply the cost of the gyro by 2 for parts needed to keep a non gyro heli flying. Seriously get one. And having wasted money on the cheap route, for sure you want a decent heading lock gyro. Rate gyros have difficulty holding during pitch/power increases/decreases so basically anytime you increase or decrease pitch/throttle the tail is moving. Bad juju. The 401 is good but read a few reviews and i think youll find that the the logictech 2100t is a fantastic gyro with even more features than the 401 but about $30 cheaper, dimensionally smaller, and lighter too. Its what I bought for my trex and its absolutely worth every cent.
