Hi Guys,

Quite new to fuel warbirds and I maidened my Hellcat yesterday and it was a pretty good maiden

I literally had to give 2 clicks of right Aileron and she was pretty much on the button.

Any ways, the question I need to ask is how are you guys filling the tank after a flight?

I'm using a Saito 100 and with the supplied 2 pipe tank I fitted a T joint between the tank and carb and the bottom nozzle is my fill pipe. Except it isn't because when I use that my fuel spills out the carb even though the carb is fully closed.

So for now, I'm having to fill via the carb hose itself but that means having to remove the cowling all the time, I'm sure you guys agree that is a real pain.

Being new to fuel I'm wondering can you guys give me some ideas on a good way around this please? Is my only option a 3 pipe system as the carb is below the tank on this model? I think the pressure might still force it out the carb still.

If you use something could you possibly provide a link and I'll see if it's available in the UK.

Thanks guys.

Alex

I have used hemostats to clamp off the portion of the fuel line that goes from the "tee" to the carb so that the fuel can only flow into the tank.

On my Hangar 9 Hellcat I am using a YS 1.10 for power. I don't have your fueling problem since the fuel nipples are on the front of the engine just behind the thrust washer.

I used the slimline fueling valve on my Hellcat. It worked just fine...

I prefer to use the 3 line system and run the 3rd line(which also has a clunk on it in the tank) to a fuel dot on the side of the plane somewhere. So much easier to fuel/defuel the plane. The pressure will not push fuel out the carb unless you have the lines hooked up wrong or the pressure tube inside the tank not pointing to the top of the fuel tank. once fuel gets above the pressure line in the tank it will run out the muffler....trhis is how you know the fuel tnak is full(make sure your pressure tube is pointed up and the end of it is very, very close to the top of the tank as the plane is sitting no its wheels.

A slimline or GP type fueling valve will work, but those can and will eventually leak as the seal breaks down(not right away....probably a couple years...but ive seen them go out after only a few flights). You dont want a leak in the system obviously, but, many ppl use them so they must work well enough for awhile.
I dont use hemostats. I tried that on a H9 Spitfire and it was a headache. Plus you run the risk of damaging the hose line creating a possible leak there after a while.
Pic shows a fuel dot on the side of the fuse behind the cowl on my VQ P-40. I use fuel dots on all my planes now including the H9 Hellcat, 1.50 size P-51, B-25...etc..etc. They work wll for me and arent an eyesore.
2nd pic shows the fuel dot in a recessed hatch location on my H9 1.50 P-51. Hatch door was put on later.

I used the Dubro fill fitting, same as GP. You only have to use a two line system and you are full when you see fuel squirting out of the exaust. Ofcourse that only works with side and inverted mounted engines.
