DCGayhart -> Prop speed on Yellow P-38 (5/6/2008 3:27:11 PM)

I’m getting to the bottom of the list of issues I have to fix before the test flight of my Yellow P-38. One of the issues is the RPM limits of my props. I’m using Graupner three blade props. I started with 15x8’s on my Moki 1.35’s but the RPM (10100) exceeded the limit recommend by Graupner (9047). I bought a new set of 16x8’s, the biggest they make and lowered the nitro in the PowerMaster fuel from 15% to 10%.

Now I’m seeing static RPM of 8400 on props that are limited to 8595. I’m considering limiting the throttle throw at full throttle to 7800 RPM so the props won’t unload over the limit. I will also exercise throttle management to limit full throttle during down lines. Do you think I’m conservative enough?

I’m in east TX heading for the Joe Nall.

I ran the engines today and keep them down to 7800 RPM, they still pull very strong. I guess i'll try and find another twin guy at the Nall. I'm leaving Tyler TX tomorrow and heading east towards Woodruff SC.
