Kingsbury – 5-3-08

We had a great race at Kingsbury. The wind became an issue as the day wore on, but the pilots did a great job and handled it well. 20 pilots made the journey. 16 in advanced and 4 in Novice. All 4 of the Novice pilots were from the Hotmac club in Waco. Thanks for coming guys! I also wish to thank Eric Desardi and David Gressens for making the trip from the Houston area to attend the race.

We had some great volunteer race officials.
Thanks Chuck Krupchek. (cook), Andy Clapp, Brian Kirby, George Sheffield, and Stan Lattrell (lap counters) Jim Duda and Robert Staton (pylon judges) “Crash” Siegel (data entry) and Jim Rice (D-8 VP) who did the starter duties all day. We could not have had such a great time without the efforts of these volunteers!

The wind was a major factor in this race. Due to the direction and velocity, the turn at pylon 1 was extremely treacherous. Several planes fell victim to the “over roll and yank” syndrome! At least 3 planes went in at this point and the impact area was with-in 20 feet of each other!

On to results!

In Novice class we had a tie between Richard Moll and Ron Harding with 13 points each. Richard Moll had the fast time of 2:17.06 so he got the win. Jim McGuinn had 9 points and GC Dimit had 4 points.

Advanced class was very close once again.

Jeff Large led the pack with a perfect 16 points AND had fast time during the heat races with 1:37.47
Jeff Tichenor had 15 points
Fast Eddie Flesher had 14 points,
David Gressens had 14,
Tim Purcell had 11
Ken Hopson had 10
Rafael Ladesma had 10
Chuck Esh had 10
Jim Agnew had 10
Doug Staines had 8
Gary Fisher had 8
Eric Desardi had 6
Brian Strawn had 5
Freddy French and Jason Duda both crashed in their first heat and did not have a back up plane.

In the mains we had some very close races. We started out with the D main featuring Brian Strawn against Gary Fisher and Doug Stains. Brian did not start and Gary went on to take the win over Doug.
In the C main, Rafael Ladesma took the win over Chuck Esh (2nd) Jim Agnew (3rd) andGary Fisher (4th).
In the B main Tim Purcell took the victory over Rafael Ladesma (2nd) and Ken Hopson (3rd).
The A main was a classic! It pitted Jeff Large, Jeff Tichenor, Fast Eddie Flesher and Tim Purcell against each other in one of the best races we have had to date!
The planes jockied for position and changed the lead many times before Fast Eddie finally pulled ahead to take the win AND the fast time of the day with a 1:29.31! Jeff Large came in 2nd followed closely by Tim Percell and Jeff Tichenor.

A big thanks to all the pilots and most specially, all our volunteer officials for making this a great race!

Hopefully, others will post some pictures of the race as I was too busy to take any!

Next race in the series is June 7 at the Georgetown club. http://www.gamarc.org/

Hope to see you all there!!

Chuck

As Chuck said, the wind claimed several planes turning #1...with the wind blowing directly down the course, as you completed the turn you suddenly had a 25 - 30mph tailwind so the controls were relatively sluggish. 3 pilots couldn't recover in time at pylon height altitude.

There was another challenge beside the wind...seems the 60 second start clock jumped in the way of one on landing...

Here are the pilots...

Hopefully the Tri-Cities guys will host some more races in the future. They have a REALLY nice facility with plenty of room and put on a great event.

The Aerodrome next door is absolutely unbelievable. It's a construction/restoration facility for WWI aircraft. The inventory of planes and parts is mind-blowing. A Fokker DR1 triplane, a couple of DVIIs, A Thomas-Morse Scout, a Bleriot (the old wing-warping design), plus a plethora of other stuff. If anybody is driving on I-10 near the Kingsbury/Seguin area you shouldn't miss the opportunity to stop in and get a look back at some of the most historic planes from the beginning of aviation.
