lechuza -> Super Tigre G2300 upsidedown. (5/6/2008 6:38:20 PM)

Hello, I have installed a Super Tigre G2300 upsidedown on my Great Planes Giant Supersporter, because the manual recalls to install the engine that way.Any way, I am having hard time to keep the engine running at idle.I tried 5% and 15% nitro fuel, Short Hot to Short medium hot glow plugs like O.S. #3 and O.S. #8 respectively, Enya short hot glow plug #3, and late a Fox miracle long medium hot glow plug, which with this last one, I got worse engine running,(spurs, irregular R.P.M., low to high transition very bad, and some kind of detonation) why???I read that this glow plug can be used either on 4-stroke and 2-stroke glow engines. The O.S. and Enya shorts glow plugs works fine but there is still the idle running problem. Also, the engine manual recomends the use of a general purpose long R/C glow plug.

Also, every time the engine quits, there is a continiously droping of fuel coming out from the carburaetor, which makes me believe that some flooding happens(my opinion).Any way, the engine starts well, and most of the iddle to hight transition goes pretty good, the problem is when go to idle with the engine upside down and that drops of fuel coming out of the carburetor intake.

What can be done to correct those things mentioning above?, Has anyone with upsidedown installed glow engines develop those problems, specially with the Super Tigre engines? Should I try other type of long glow plug?, What about the ones with idle bar?

Thanks, Isaias G.

with the engine inverted, the carb hangs down. So the fuel dripping from the carb would normally drip into the engine whilst flooding it.
This indicates, that your tank is too high!!!

I think the consensus is that the best plug for this engine is the OS F plug, a lot of people including me have had a hard time making this engine run well.

On OS-F, and a good carb, this is a wonderful engine. The original carb can be modified well to give very dependable and powerful running day in day out.
I used as fuel:
18% oil
2% acethone
3% nitro
balance methanol.
The acethone as stabilizer and cold starting aid can be replaced with nitromethane, but winter starts and humid weather behaviour will suffer.

I run a 2300 in the front of a Mustang. No cline or anythng. You need to lower the tank, if you don't you will continue to have "issues." Mine starts up as any other normal engine and no problems for about 4 years now.

Here it is a few years ago which I downloaded from Jetts, website

I'm sure jealous of how your 2300 runs cyclic, do you think that muffler helped your reliability. I know I have a problem with my 3 piece muffler loosening up in flight and probably letting my fuel tank pressure drop.

If it can be made to run reliable you cant beat the power for $130.

G'day Club members near where I live fly lots of scale models using the large ST engines like yours. Those who have the most success use OS F plugs and perry pumps or other regulators. This is because in their scale models they cannot always get the tank where it needs to be but with a Perry pump, they find they get very reliable performance from their Tigres. It is really impressive to watch them start these engines simply by priming them then giving the spinner a good solid back flip. From your description of fuel dripping out of the carby, your tank is simply mounted too high relative to the carby.

Cyclic, What rpm, and propeller are you using? I sure want to get me a mustang like yours for my 2300. What modifications did you have to do to get that bird flying?

I'll tell you this thing is hot! Muffler helps a bit. It doesn't "get on the pipe" in an obvious way as my .50 or similar. I recall this story before but that project was originally intended as a POS Dago Red that is purple like the Voodoo for $120 or something. It was going to be a beater. I had a cheap plane , a cheap engine, cheap retracts and the whole thing.

Well I flew it that way for a year and i told myself, if it lasted, I'd rebuild and recover. So now its actually red, better retracts, clipped wings and has been one of my better flying planes. I'm running a 12/8 apc. What you see up front is basic. I reinforced the firewall. Beefed up the retract mounts. When i rebuilt, the front end is now solid with a hatch thing on the bottom like manyP-51s have now, no cowl.

Tank is basically resting on the bottom. I have several planes with inverted engines and no clines or anythng and all start up as normal and tune up fine as long as that tank is down. None of this starting it upside down and flipping th e plane over stuff. I running cheap tower plugs (A3 clone) and 15% Omega with no complaints.

I haven't flown any planes since last summer due to my catract which is now gone. Took up helis. So this week i get fitted for distance glasses and should be ready to rock and roll here shortly. I miss mouthing off to the speed guys![:D]

Buzz-you may recall that guy about a year back that had this same plane claiming to get 175mph. I doubt it. I don't think it would hold up at that speed. I'm getting about 110mph respectively and at 5000ft. So this is good.

This is just a 60 size. You now if your don't want to fool with mufflers and all. Couple buddies have the H9 60 size Marie with 120 4 strokes. Simple setup up in the nose. Move real good when propped right. Maybe get one of those slimline mufflers
