oh,Bought my first warbird about 6 moths ago,a Hangar 9 Spitfire.I have never spent so much time and effort into putting an arf together.I even ordered a Celeo scale muffler and put on the plane.

Anyway,one COLD day in February I couldnt wait any longer and took the plane with me to the air strip for its maiden voyage.

First thing is that a Saito 100 is very hard to get started in minus 10 degrees,and when it finally start you almost cant feel your hands,now,this is the time you start making HUGE mistakes.I taxied the plane to the runway,and took off!The plane rolled over to its back and crashed into some threes at almost full throttle.I stood there as a big ??****

I forgot checking my ailerons,rudder,elevators.And offcourse my ailerons where reversed:(

This is the stupidest and most painful mistake I have EVER done in my model flying history[:@]

Sorry for your loss. It looked like a beautiful plane !!! We probably ALL have done the same thing, only don't have the cold to blame did you say minus 10 ? Man, no wonder,it's been proven that in cold weather the human brain won't function properly !! Of course, mine sometimes don't function in 80 degree weather.

Hey Larscato

The spit looks repairable. Do not give up. It is a nice case to gain some expertiese with it.
Good luck on the rebuilt or your next project.

I bought new wings for it.The fuse managed to get away with almost no damage,quite amazing,It was a VERY hard "landing":)Must be because of my incredible piloting skills,or maybe not...

My second glow bird was a Tower Hobbies Voyager. It was a inexpensive low-winger that flew well for the price. On the maiden I realized the ailerons were backwards, hate to admit it but it happens when you rush, ALWAYS! Thats why I double check everything now even if I have to write it down beforehand. On that day I was lucky. I had enough rudder training on my old trainer that I was able to get the plane back in one piece. Ironic enough, I put over 50 flights on that bird and then one day the "one last flight" syndrome took it. Still unsure what happened as there was not much left to determine the cause.

Every time I hear about ailerons reversed,It makes me a little more careful.I have a buddy that I fly with and we always watch each other preflight our planes.I caught this exact thing on one of his.
As for the Spit.You still have all the goodies that went into it.I would just buy another and get to work.Im building The H9 Corsair right now.Found a huge post to help with all the bugs.If I do crash It.Ill just build another as I have all the goodies.I think I will be buying that Spit. when I can get the scratch together. Love the look of that plane............Gary

I had a extra and got in a hurry to fly, and thats when things go wrong, I forgot to plug in my ailerons not a pretty sight. But you know that stuff happens when we get in a hurry, now I know to check all that stuff out before my plane gets on the run way just to make sure everything is working right.

Bummer friend, on the mishap. I did the same thing on my Spitfire the maiden flight. I lucked out and was able to land, but with ailerons reversed it's not an easy job. I had to put full concentration into just keeping it level, after touch-down I've never had it happen again. My Top Flight Spitfire arrives today! Wha-hoo! Well, at least new parts from Horizon are available also not to bad of price. Good luck, have fun, "check your flight controls", regardless of the weather. [;)] starcop

thanx for all the replies you guys:)Finally,tonight,after several months of doing nothing with the Spitfire I got it finished!If possible it is looking even better than before the crash.
I cant help it but the general shape of the Spitfire makes my knees feel weak:)Tomorrow It will have its second maiden.Lets hope is goes better than last time.One thing is for sure,the weather sure is a lot warmer than it was on my last attempt:)I will post some pics soon...

Hey man,don't feel too embarassed,welcome to the club!I also made that same mistake with a TT Champion 45!I've never seen an aeroplane break into such small pieces before!What made it worse is that I'm an aircraft mechanic and the guy who's plane it was has been flying for 20 years and we still managed to overlook such a little thing!Goes to show that checking and re-checking and even getting someone else to also have a look is one of the surest ways of avoiding something like this.

I had an Easy Sport 40 ARF. I put the wing on the saddle and plugged the ailerons in, but I forgot to put the nylon screws in. The plane actually took off. I know I couldn't believe it either. I noticed some serious trim problems, I made corrections and then I heard a bang and could see the fuse dangle. The wing separated when I tried to make a turn back to the runway. It was ugly. The wing made it though. Anyone want an easy sport 40 wing in perfect condition?

well.the wings,cowl and stab are brand new.The fuselage is pretty much the only thing left from the other spit.I did it this way because the wing was a mess and I didn want a brand new plane to look like it had been repaired.:)I like spare parts:)
