KBurns -> Tamiya Hot shot (5/6/2008 11:06:13 PM)

The kit is a very good kit but it is a very heavy model and very slow. Tamiya has tried to put out a blast from the past so the weight and speed is OK for it being a past item. I did install full bearings but other then that kept the kit bone stock. I did not run into any building problem every thing went together fine and easy. I installed the front DIFF gear up side down and this caused the gear to slip. I did not do any damage and was able to flip the gear over and it is working fine. The speed control is a sad try at an upgrade from the 3 position resister type of the past. Half of the time, the car will shoot out backwards when turned on, that is my fault as I forget to reset the speed control after changing the battery out. It will remember the setting for a short time like when doing a quick swap at the local parking lot but when you take out the main battery and let it charge over night, you have to remember to reset the speed control. The screws is very cheap. this is something Tamiya should work on and start using hex head screws for the kits. nothing worse then stripping the Phillips head out. Also the screws do rust and they rust fast. i ran threw a tiny puddle and by the time I was able to get home the screews where rusted bad. I would say for the 180.00 plus tax and shipping the kit is NOT WORTH it at all. The rear gear box is held to the main chassis by two mounting points and both are up at the top of the main chassis. very week and the flex at this point is enormous and will most likely crack in time. A better way to mount the gear box would be at both the top and bottom of the main chassis. I would not suggest this kit to anyone as much better kits are out there at a cheaper price. On the other hand if Tamiya would re-release the Sand Scorcher, Rough Rider and f-150 in the exact kit form, it originally came out in, that would be a hot seller.
