Hi, I am surprised how many frequently used words are misspelled in posts: Gluing > glueing Rivets > rivits Throttle > throttel and there are many more... English is not my mother tongue and these words are spelled wrong so often I sometimes forget which one is the correct spelling.[>:]

wHut du u meen, bade spillin? Eye dunt no watt yur talkin aboot.. Seems like the guys from overseas spells better than the guys in the US. I didn't pay much attention in high school ( girls & cars you know). But I did learn how to spell. (Most of the time)

Don't even get me started on this! [:@] Although I WILL say that the one I see most often - even by well-educated members is: To vs Too "Too" has two different uses. It means "Also" as in, "Joe flew his new plane, and I flew it too" or "Bill wants to fly too" It is also used to mean "In excess" as in, "Your muffler is too loud" or "Our club has too many members" Thank you for your cooperation.

Misspelling and wrong word usage like to / too or here / hear doesn’t bother me. What drives me nuts is a post that is put together like a text message, using single letters for entire words such as: “R U using a …” [:@] Another peeve is sentences that are so poorly constructed it’s impossible to understand what the poster is saying. If they would just re-read what they typed before hitting OK. [8\|] or go back and edit just like I had to, or is it too. [:D]

You've got that right. We seem to be producing a nation of young people who don't know what a sentence is.

You know what, guys? This problem drives me nuts. One that has not been mentioned here that really gets to me is "then" for "than". However, I have been scalded in this very forum for bringing it up in the past and swore to myself that I would not go there (their or they're) again. I've thought about it a lot and have come to the conclusion that only about 5% of the people even notice or care. The predominant attitude is that if the post can be deciphered, no matter how long it takes, it's ok. The dean of the English department at the university I attended told me once that there is no such thing as bad grammar as long as the message gets through. It may be bad use of the language, but the grammar is ok if it is understood. On the other hand, when folks post in an open forum or public sign of some sort using no capital latters, no periods, gross incorrect spelling, etc., it may take me several minutes to decipher the message whereas other folks who write in a similar fashion have no problem with it. So, I suppose then it becomes my shortcoming, not the writers'. I guess I need to learn Spanish also now as well as Chinese in the future, since China seems to be taking over the world. I bought a tee shirt once in New York City that said "Welcome to America. Now speak English". I really believe in that idea and I think it should be expanded to writing as well. But, as I said earlier, i aint goin their no mor i dun bene scolt fer it your jus gonna have to unnerstan i don't want no argyment over this

Text messaging lingo in company email is becoming the bane of businesses in the country. A message such as "R U Going to attend the meeting?" going out companywide and to clients makes us all look like morons.

Seems like a lot of these younger folks today are completely aware that a sentence of 3-5 years means they'll be out in 6 months with good behavior. And then, if they play the system right, they can be doing the same old thing and still avoid violating parole. I say give them a sentence easy to remember: 15-20, no chance of parole. Maybe, in the meantime, they can learn to spell and use good grammar. [:D]

Ok I addmit it I,m not the worlds best speller. It was a lot easyer when we had that spell check but now that is gone so now I have to do the best I can. If you have a prob. with bad spellers than perhaps you should look within your self [)]

I keep two books at my computer desk. One is a "Webster's New World Dictionary" and the other is "Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary". If I am unsure of the spelling of a word, I look it up. Probably takes 30 seconds out of my busy day.[>:] I recently discovered that I have been spelling "seize" and "weird" incorrectly for 60 years. What happened to the "i before e except after c" rule that they beat into my head in the eight grade? Oh, well. I believe rcjon is correct. Get the first and last letters correct and the middle will take care of itself. By they way, folks, how difficult is it for you all to scramble these words when you know better? You really have to concentrate to do it.

I agree with JollyPopper, and I also keep a dictionary along with a thesaurus [sp] next to my computer at home, but I'm not at home right now. Where I work, I'm surrounded by people who are unaware that they even use poor grammar. It's really annoying, to say the least, and is one of my biggest pet peeves. I believe it has become an epidemic of sorts, especially in the Deep South.
